If you find +damage rings with lvl 3 requirement or attach zeus lightning bolt to a lvl 3 weapon, you can keep them in your stash and help boost new characters.
You might find this wiki useful, it's alphabetical, so Nessus is down a way from the top in the "N"s:

What I do is slowly nudge my character toward him from a south to north direction. The moment he blows that horn(HEH!) I turn and run away. He will usually give chase while his minions hit the 'out of view limit' and turn back to their territory sooner rather than later leaving it 1 on 1 fight. Afterwards I can treat his minions as regular mobs.
Another trick I do is look at the Buff Shrine near the Spartan Camp. If it's Frost, Thorns, Mastery, or Battle, I save it for Nessus. I clear out the valley then head back to the shrine, activate it then head back to Nessus and draw him for one on one fight. Having +Movement, Herme's Relic, or that Runemaster Lv. 1 Skill that gives 10% Movement will help to get to Nessus faster after activating the Shrine although it can be done without speed buffs if you know the lay of the land.
Easy solution for me was to lure him to the guard north of him (just run from south to north. let him come close so he will chase you - sometimes you have to return a bit if Nessus stops to follow) and let them do the dirty work. Those guards are immortal. If you like you can "help" them a bit as Nessus ignores you, once the guards are in fight.
You can take out his minions first, if you want.
