...and later you'll get a spear merc (Ragnarök provided) near the end of the difficulty.
On the serious side: I doubt that any changes of that dimension will happen in this vintage game...
Also, there might be pet mods offering something similar.
I agree. There are plenty of classes and skills that let you summon adds if you want them. I for one do not want hiring a merc (like D2) to be meta to get to end game/grinding faster. I like killing the monsters myself not having every class rely on adds/mercs to kill everything for me. There is a reason why neroc/summon classes are separate so you can play that play style if you want.
I'm all for more options for others but I don't want it like D2 where hiring a merc is part of the game no matter the class you choose. I'm more of a lone wolf ;)
Yeah, I think the game wont have any expansions from now on. Probably modes yes. Still just a thought.
I use them with assassin when I need some short diversion to get close to difficult bosses. A permanent mercenary with a tankier build would be more useful.
I have a special pet build just for that, champion with massive pet dmg buffs.
The Nemean Lion Set.
Dual Fervor of Leucetius.
The Cursed Jewels.
The 3 wolves and one nayad are ripping them to shreds before I barely touch them.
Not something I'd want as I hate this sort of thing. But you could try this mod which gives them among lots of other things.

I was really dissapointed when using a high level core dweller in act 1 normal, it struggled against trash mobs, let alone bosses.
...Diablo 2 had no mercs. That's Diablo 3.
D2 had a mercenary: your character. You're out there to do a job by taking out evil that stalks the land and what you are paid is what you can pillage from your enemies, your character also takes quests and complete them as well.
TQ is the same, your character starts out with nothing, evil stalks the land and you're given quests to follow and rewards for it.
Wrong, D2 had hirelings.
I played with friends but they are not available whenever I want and also I can't CONTROL them.
