Question Sep 26, 2021 @ 4:29am
How is Life Drain's damage calculated?
I made a new character and at level 2, put 2 points into the spirit mastery's Life Drain skill.

And it is hitting the low level mobs at Helos for 220+ damage.

How is it hitting for that much? The tooltip says 68 vitality damage and 160% attack damage converted to health.

The only explanation i can think of is that the 160% attack damage isnt just converted to health, it affects the damage you deal as well.

I thought it would be :

68 vitality damage done and you heal for 160% * 68, but it clearly does WAY more damage than 68 vitality damage...

Edit : I tested it and it seems like the 160% is misleading, it appears as a fixed 160 damage in purple damage numbers but it actually deals no damage...

The damage figures you see are correct.
What damage figures you are actually seeing is this (I started a spirit build, it is level 4 with 2 points into Life Drain), thsi is an excerpt from a damage log:

26-09-2021 10:51:15: defenderID = 46911
26-09-2021 10:51:15: combatType = Direct Attack
26-09-2021 10:51:15: ^y 71.290764 of Life(9) Damage to Defender 0xb73f
26-09-2021 10:51:15: Total Damage: Absolute (231.290771), Over Time (0.000000)
26-09-2021 10:51:15: ^bRacial Bonus Damage: (0.000000)
26-09-2021 10:51:15: criticalStrike = 1.000000
26-09-2021 10:51:15: regionHit = Head
26-09-2021 10:51:15:
26-09-2021 10:51:15: ^b160.000000% Life Leech return 25.600000 Life

Remember the first few areas creatures monsters have little to no resistances so Life Drain can be quite powerful, it diminishes the further into the game you go, unless using good debuffs (necrosis, need to be close enough for it to help), also Circle of Power doubles your damage output. Also as much gear with vitality damage flat or % is very useful.

should try a spirit build next, see what that does.

How much fun do like having?
Like to play non-classic builds?
I have a Shaman in Act 4 Epic and I play it as a duel wielding/ knife thrower berserker.
Great fun (no deaths), the lack of health became a concern in Act 3 Epic, but sorted that with a ring (it only had 2600 hp up to that point, but life leeching kept it alive easily).

Take advantage of them lovely purples that drop, 2 x Neiths Will means you can use Thunder strike a lot, which I use against the undead.
Other set up 2 x Piau with a lot of life leech and charmed with life leech and speed. I really do not mind taking damage as it is constantly replenished.

i've played two builds so far, hunter and stormcaller. the second build i used a mix of life draining secondary attack and cold/lightning primary attack. those bat fangs help out when full completed and the additional life drain bonus for the completed, early on that's a monster that's saved my bacon a few times and drastically reduced the death count.

on the first playthrough i had about 20 deaths upto delphi, but on the second using that above it's been reduced to 2 deaths heading to delphi. i suspect if i go full life draining things will get even more interesting.

i actually want to get through one first and get some achievements, including a single spec build all the way through before trying a dual build.
