So i have to be patient till epic then.
Too boost pet damage, get items that boost pet damage. Rings are a good option for this. Too boost survivability, get Survival Instinct synergy so they get good damage mitigation when they're low on health and use Regrowth to top them up.
Also, get +2 to nature at a min so you can get the third wolf. A +2 nature amulet or +1 nature amulet and +1 from another source like Stonebinder's Cuffs.
Keep your eyes peeled for rings and amulets with the "of Servitude", "of Subjugation", and later "of Enslavement" suffixes. They give your pets some extra Armor. And they're even better when they come with a suitable pet prefix. Ditto for "Puppetmaster's" staves and amulets.
In Epic, maybe already in Act 4 or 5 Normal, you'll eventually find "of Convocation" (Lvl 35 required) on amulets (and some few unique weapons). That gives the pets 20% AttDmg2Health, and after that, they'll run soothly and mostly maintenance free.
That stuff can be found at vendors, too, but it definitely is rare. So, when you sell stuff, go to the mage vendor and screen the jewelry for good stuff.
As you might or might not know, the pet buff stuff has a certain level grading, so you should keep your buff stuff up to date - "Summoner's" (lvl 28) would be the appropriate grade you want where you are now.
Also max Heart of Oak and Permanence o Stone if you haven't done so yet.
Last thing: Depending on what second mastery you chose, you can maybe debuff the baddies - like Distortion Wave if that's Drean, or Study Prey + Flush Out for Hunter.
You need a none pet lovers answer.
Pets are from Act 3 (or even before) trash. You are better of to respec yourself till you get into Epic. Make yourself a decent build that can last by itself. With pets (if noobie), wolves they kill everything, amazing!. Then! damn they keep dying and I you are too week to survive.
Petmancer is not noobie friendly.
You have to know when pets are good and when pets are awful, they do not progress well, especially if you need to keep yourself alive.
Petmancer is a difficult build to get right for even someone who knows the game. It is too much respeccing, giving pets the gear or you have it, either way you are weak or your pets are.
After all putting points into pets instead of yourself, who gets weak?
It is not noobie friendly.
Now all you petmancers tell me you can have a petmancer build last all acts in normal, without messing and cheating and destroy Typhon in seconds. Please show me. And stop encouraging noobies to be a petmancer.
Help noobies, stop giving bad advice. Remember what it was like to start from nothing.
This game can be difficult but with the wrong advice (I sometimes give it), it can be awful!
For petmancer build, I'd say drop a point into Regrowth for heal and go max into wolves at start. Get them the max stats and they will blow through the early content. Look for mastery shrines, when you get one, summon a third wolf and try to keep your three wolves alive. Level up Nature mastery so you can get Heart of Oak for hp boost (and speed boost with your first point).
Heart of Oak will give you a huge health pool which will help you stay alive if you get aggro. Of course, depending on what your second mastery you may be a tank and fight alongside your wolves without much worry.
At level 8, you'd probably want to switch over to your second mastery and focus on yourself a bit. Warfare? Buff your pets with Battle Standard while you fight alongside them. Hunting? Go pew-pew with throwing weapons from behind your wolves. Rogue? Same thing but add in traps and poisons. Or you could pick a caster mastery and cast spells from behind. Quite a few options, stats would depend on what style you want to play.
Too much respeccing? Only time I can see you might want to respec is in late normal, skip wolves until epic. Then respec back when you start in Epic. I don't think there's anywhere else you'd need to think about respeccing.
Normal Typhon will indeed pretty much destroy wolves in seconds. With all the AOEs he has, pets can get wiped fast, especially in normal. This the most difficult fight for petmancers and will most likely require copious amounts of cheese (hit and runs attacks, going pew-pew with bow from long range, etc.) Act 4 is a bit of difficulty spike compared to previous content but wolves can clear it.
It would be harder for people who don't have the version of the game that gives the hp buff to pets for beating the Yeti in Act 3 (the initial consoles versions didn't have this I believe) as pets would be more fragile in this case which would be an issue in late normal.
Pure support petmancer was actually the first class that I completed full legendary clear with lol. I had several characters going and had petmancer for the low kill achievement. After getting the achievement I was curious to see if pure pet build could do full legendary.
Caster petmancer can clear content with total garbage gear (I think I killed Hades without any vitality resistance on me, you don't die if you don't take damage lol). Just get some random +skill items and pet buffing stuff. Wolves can tank certain bosses fairly easily (Hydra, Manticore, etc.) and get you a stash of gear for your other characters.
I don't enjoy this character as much as other characters, prefer my petmancer Champion that deals out damage next to my wolves and murders bosses in seconds, but it's not a terrible option.
Answer to the question is: What build do you have? because if you are heavily leaning towards pets you are going to die a lot unless you like running away a lot.
Try to think everyone most people new to the game do not need trash builds, but a few good solid builds to get them started. Then maybe they can go towards a petmancer.
And I do not care what you think, because (being the OCD TQ monster that I am), I know I am right. Remember noobies not game players.
Focusing on favourite build types? OP asked about wolf viability and people responded to his question. Struggles a bit in late normal (but still playable, as you can do no kill runs after all) but are fine from Epic onward.
Also, you can't tell people how to enjoy the game. Everybody has different tastes in playstyle after all.
I've done dual wield, tank and spank, reflection, pure caster, auramancer, pure summoner, pets as support, ranged, etc. Lots of viable (and fun) builds in TQ.
For pet focused builds?
'No Kill' Support Soothsayer, first character clear, died a lot but had really bad gear. Used it to farm gear for my other characters. Can be run with pretty basic gear. A bit of micro-management needed with pets. Made knock against it is that I prefer more proactive build rather than staying in the back casting heals and such.
Champion - melee / summoner, 1h + shield, picked up Hardcore achievement with it. You have lots of health from Oak, dodge from Warfare, good armour, good melee damage, murders bosses fast via Banner Standard + Ancestral Horn combo.
Dreamkiller - melee / trapper, did 3x max Hardcore as Accomplish character, so much CC and I simply love Phantom Strike, twinked a lot

Wow...You actually said how bad pets are in normal on an earlier post and then tried to tell them how to make them last. Also get "+2 to nature", where do you think he is? Wow he must be in epic now "+2 to nature".
If you looked or read what I said I am all for people finding there own play style.
You have played for a long time in this game, that is obvious by what you say your builds have been.
When is the last time you played from level 1, without gifting at some point? Do you play mostly level 40 characters and "gift them"? Tell me honestly. Because I really want people to enjoy this game and not get sucked in by b""""""t. from players who have forgotten how hard it can be to start. And petmancer is not newbie friendly as far as I am concerned.
Anyway's not my gripe....Answer to the question, anything is viable depending how you have distributed your points. You can always respec, check what you need. And go forward. Eyeball the difference. If you respec and are unsure go to an earlier waypoint and try it out. Just in the end "enjoy".
p.s good fun is not dying. 17 characters between normal Medeas Grove and Epic Dark Lands (0 deaths)
/shrug When I first started playing petmancer I also heard that wolves were trash in Act 4 and you needed to respec out of them at this point. Doing a 0 kill run, I didn't do this, went through Act 4 with wolves as pure support character doing nothing but cast heals and buffs. No plague for debuff, no Ternion, etc. and honestly don't remember having any serious issues. This was pre-Ragnarok, I cleared Legendary with her before it hit and did my first run of Ragnarok Legendary with her.
+2 to Nature, not to All Skills. This should be much easier to find, +1 to a single mastery is more frequently found usually. A +1 Nature amulet can be equipped at level 15, shouldn't be too hard to find one. The other +1 skill can be gotten from a farmed Stonebinder's Cuffs and later replaced by some random source of +1 Nature skill. If you can't get +2 Nature, then you'd just have to make do with 2 wolves which is obviously not as ideal. Extra wolf = extra body = extra DPS and aggro magnet.
Well, I tried out a few characters when I first started to try out the various masteries. Tried out various archetypes, played a bit of each through normal up to Typhon and swapped gear I found between each. Then I came to Typhon and remember dying constantly and being frustrated. Hardest boss for new players. Found out I needed some vitality resistance to keep him from owning me and healing up. Farm a bunch, can't find this resist. Apparently there was a mythical helm called 'Hallowed' that provided this but I can't find one either as there super rare in normal (My advice to new players is to socket Demon's Blood into rings / necklace).
I was able to clear him slowly with hit and run attacks with my Soothsayer, decided to keep going with her and use her to farm gear later for my other characters. For gear, a couple of random pet rings, some random items with +skill and a bunch of random other stuff I found. Summon pets, sprint past everything to boss, kill boss, repeat. Can be a little boring admittedly when you're just sitting back waiting to heal. Relying on your pets entirely means there's danger when they don't hold aggro; you have a good health pool to eat damage through and being a summoner doesn't mean you have to entirely rely on your pets, I just did because I was doing a 0 kill run with her, however, it made for a good way in my own experience to do some farming and get a feel for boss mechanics. I loved Champion as a summoner as you can dish out pain and take it yourself and are proactive in the fight alongside your pets.
I swept through Typhon on later characters in the low-mid 20s without much difficulty later. Having proper resists prepared ahead of time and understanding the mechanics make the fight much easier. Nowadays of course I pretty much always start at 40 and gift to skip the more boring earlier parts of the game, start with a full fleshed build and get to endgame quicker. Early game is kind of boring.
According to Steam's stats, only 2% of players have even completed normal difficulty with zero death. If good fun is not dying then most players much hate playing Titan Quest /sarcasm
I fully expect new players to die. A lot. Not being appropriately geared, not having the right resistances for certain zones or bosses, lack of understanding of game mechanics, etc. Hardcore runs are really reserved for veterans.

TL;DR there's a specific way to play a nature/x petmancer so that it will destroy anything regardless of which part of the game you're currently in. Typhon is particularly easy for a pure Wanderer in AE who basically just swoops in, grabs Battle Marker, casts maxed Plague/Scroll of Sky's Rage and runs circles around Typhon. If you want easy mode play a pure Wanderer in normal and switch to your desired multiclass combo in Epic.
Nature/x petmancers also unique in that they require zero amount of extra support outside of a solid knowledge of in-game mechanics - specifically the importance of +pet damage jewelry, DA/resistances and the slows enemy attack mod.
Obviously no one expects even experienced players who don't specialize in petmancers/summoners (let alone newbies) to know all this stuff, which is why guides like the above exist. The guide is old, but the guy who wrote the guide apparently plays petmancers almost exclusively - and it took him/her a while to figure this stuff out.
In any case no amount of preparation is going to be the equivalent of foreknowledge/experience in this game. You WILL die unless you know what to expect, and that's part of the learning process. No casual build in existence will save you from Barmanu's meteor fall attack if you're just going to stand there unprepared.
As for the wolves themselves, the bottomline is that they're living nukes and they're essentially one of the most powerful nukes in the entire game because of how well pet damage scales. Unfortunately unless your build is somehow able to max out Survival Instinct/Regrowth/Heart of Oak then the main downside to the wolves is that they can be really squishy, but that's why you use backup/aggro-grabbing skills like Refresh and Plague.
It's my first character I've done with no death...after 15 years and hundreds hours. (I precise that all my characters begin without stuff, only self drop, rare are the exception. For this one I was "à poil". Nude.)
Your enemies are yourself, the wolves AI sometimes, and the aggro distance.
Just put all your points in wolves branch....the first cyclops 6 seconds. Typhon was a joke... something like 40-50 seconds. Never did better with any other characters...(remind I play each character with self drop).
A breeze....and Benny hill against bosses !

At lvl 8 I remember I had the 3 wolves lvl 20 with a "maitrise" obelisk. (Sorry for my English).
My job consists in opening chests and select the drops and enjoying the travel lol.
Oh another enemy I forgot.... trapped chest. If you have your 3 wolves lvl 20 and loose some, you will be slowed in your ascension.
And set your pets in aggressive.... they clean the map.
The pain is for the equipment you drop...you need strength and dex so keep your attribute points until you have a good item. Like a bouclier (buckler ?) that requires both strength and dex.

Was this a hardcore legendary or just normal mode you did?
I stick by what I said, pets is not noobie friendly and you are no noobie.
Pets in normal start great, get awful and only get good towards end of epic or start of legendary. It is very gear dependant after normal.
I have Hardcore legendary runs with pets and different types of builds, pure int or pure strength. Builds that give all the gear to pets (Pilgrim) or just use pets for the buffs they give me(Prophet). Pet builds can be simple in legendary.
