I deffo concur with this...various targets have different resistances...lifedrain does absolutely paltry damage on stuff like undead/constructs but try it against high vitality targets like the turtles around megara and the amount of damage it does goes off the scale (figure of speech-wise).
About act 3 of Epic I took the points out of life drain and use a vitality staff that I couldn't wear until level 51 or 52. The amulet is more help with the staff, probably because my base damage now is close to 3x higher than what life drain was. Life drain was a big help leveling early though. For a good while it was my main attack with a 1.2 second regen from gear I wore.
