If anybody needs an idea on how to build a battlemage using Runes, here's my build for my character:
-Stats-
Enough STR to hold gear, everything else in INT.
-Gear-
Caster gear with lots of Health, OA and DA, and +Fire damage. Don't use Pierce weapons.
-Rune-
Rune Weapon > Magical Charge > Energy Drain > Transmutation
Sacred Rage > Frightening Power
Reckess Offense
Energy Armor
Runeword: Explode > Runeword: Burn
Seal of Fate (1 point) > Aftershock (max)
-Earth-
Earth Enchant (max) and Brimstone (max)
Heat Shield (1 point)
Ring of Fire (1 point) and Soften Metal (max)
Stone Form (max) > Molten Rock (1 point)
Eruption (max if you take it)
Volativity (max)
Rune Weapon builds up frightening amounts of Elemental damagebonus for your Earth Enchant / Volativity Runeword: Explode and Burn. You can either take Seal Fate > Aftershock OR Eruption in Earth. Seal Fate debuffs enemies considerably, Euription does A LOT of damage. If you can stomach it, max out Sacred Rage and stay below 40% HP in every fight, because it makes you very tanky and let's you spam Eruption / Seal Fate.
It might be overkill for some but being a melee mage you need all the defense you can get: Frightening Power and Soften Metal lower enemy damage. Energy Armor and Heat Shield are buffs you need to turn back on when they fall off, and substantially increase your effective health. Stone Form is your emergency button; it makes you invulnerable and gives you HP regen.
-Bonus tip for new players-
When you level up, always do 2 mastery + 1 skill. Skill scaling isn't very impressive, and the stats are worth way more early on.
You brought nothing to the discussion. I give you negative points.
warfare+nature pet mastery build, and then u need to raise Wolfs early on to get two of them.
so raising mastery is worthless..
After reading this Thread Iam also a little interested in the often suggested Rune+Earth/Storm combo. This would be a raw Int class then? Just some points in Str. and with the passive of rune wearing some Str. Weapons?
I really liked dream in my old playtroughs. What do you guys think about the Dream/Rune combo? I think it would the same int confused class then the combo with Earth/Storm?
Rogue and Rune seem a poor fit, bleeding and poison aren't elemental damages right.
I started a hunting /rune char just because the exploding weapon works with Bows and adds some aoe to marksmanship. But not much else seems to match except for Energy Armor you can use that and keep yourself with a shield that will take a couple of hits.
And yes, the Rune passive allows dual wield without Warfare at 20 percent max ranks or more with skill boosting gear.
I went defense myself. Caster with a shield early on (up to lvl 50 I think), then switching to physical melee weapon attack with shields (basicly, once I can get very resilient with shield and at low life).
Current stat investment is 1/1/1 health / Str / Dex
edit: I may go melee elemental if it appears melee elmental converted damage can crit. Until then... why bother going melee elemental ?
Thanks for this! I have been trying out how to build a Rune character and how to invest attribute points and this is exactly what I was looking for. I even wanted to pair with Earth.
Fragments are staff/bow only based on tooltip (says projectiles break into fragments).
As for what mastery to pair with it up to you really, though Earth and Storm both looks to be good choices (elemental damage buffs).
