Pure Caster?
I started playing as a pure caster and quickly found it to be unwhelming to going just full on War/Def. Does this game not cater to spell casters? I could only see going melee + spells as an option in higher levels.

Casters are definitely viable. Ternion Attack is very strong, arguably one of the best skills in the game. Staff is also arguably the best weapon for pet builds, which are probably the easiest way to beat legendary if you don't have good gear.

Really though, pretty much anything can work, even combinations that seem "bad" generally can be viable with specific gear.

Okay, I'll give a pure caster another go. :) What specs should I aim for?

Vast majority in int, a little dex, no str, no hp, no energy.

Gear depends on which specific masteries you're going with.

If you're using Ternion, the key to using it is to hold shift when attacking, and aim behind the thing you want to hit. This will cause your shots to spread out less, making it more likely that multiple bolts hit.

If you want a mage pet combo. You might try spirit mastery. Your skill would be life leech then max out the lich skill tree. Get a good fire staff and get earth as 2nd mastery with only skill maxed = volatility (sp?) to boost your fire staff. The wear some equip that reduces spell cycling so you can cast life leech more often.

I know its not pure mage but you will be casting all the time, your fire attack while life leech cycles. Lich is very powerful as well and towards the end game put points in totem.

Just a thought, its a fun build.
I would not say ternion mages are casters, because they don't cast but rather attack with their staffs. Even speed is improved by attack speed and not by casting speed.
Does anyone know if static charge works with staff attacks?

Nevermind I see, the +% apply to all dmg, and the rest is just if you get hit certain things happen. :)
