For trash mobs I like both my Haruspex, which can dispose caster/archer heavy groups more efficiently than any other I've seen, and my Harbringer that excells in getting rid of mobs rushing it. Funny thing with the latter though is if you let go of some HP (5k toal or so, fairly unfomfortable) and use 2x Mark of Ares' then you'll hit for 80-90k every few seconds (single hit with the ring bonus applied). Both are a joy to grind through mobs with. :)
I guess another option would be a Ternion monster (Spirit with anything that synergizes with elemental attacks), however I haven't played any in AE yet.
A boss-killer brigand is fairly easy to make, so is a decent Diviner or something similar; on the other hand Haru/Harbi require quite the gear to top up at what they can do. I've been farming for 10+ yrs for these two and can still improve _all_ their equipment with better drops.
I'd take Dream, not elemental...
...lowered resistances (Wrath Trance) are really nice, you don't need any other base attack apart from Ternion, and the Distort Reality AoE there just perfectly aligns with Deathchill. Distortion Wave can be nice against pesky archers, too. Best Debuffer in the game, probably. Going gets tough? Meh - switch to another Trance, and carry on.
The listed DPS in the char sheet is somewhat meh, but a) this doesn't consider the lowered resistances on the mobs, and b) when you Tern on melee range, the AoEs from each blast's Arcane Lore boost melt together. Brute packs just melt with one or two flicks of your staff. And for bosses have a "Harrowing" staff in one of your switches.
Also, your Lich and your Nightmare do away with the one or other baddie, too. Even as one-pick-wonders. Sure, the Core Dweller is not to be laughed at, too. But the Storm Wisp is meh...
Brigand will work regardless of what you throw on it, Ternion guy ditto, though needs a bit more thought.
