Best classes for priest/cleric/healer style build?
I want to create a staff-wielding build, rather than use blunt weapons and heavy armor.

I think that Nature would be the first obvious choice here, but I'm torn between other secondary classes. I think that Spirit would be interesting, with Ternion and anti-undead abilities (like the D&D cleric). However, I don't want to be a pet class, would ignore the undead summons, and the anti-undead abilities are obviously situational. Still, crushing undead is a signature ability of the cleric, and would be missed if I chose a different secondary class.

The Dream masteries could also be compatible, with things like Convalescence. On the other hand, maybe more offensive power would be better (Storm/Earth)?

Some Dream mastery skills ARE very offensive. Especially the Distort Reality skill enhanced with Temporal Rift is a weapon of mass destruction. For a comparatively low mana cost. You can also have a trance (ie Convalescence) AND an aura (ie Heart of Oak) going in the same time. But the Spirit mastery with the Ternion Attack is also a good choice.

Would Spirit be viable even if I ignored Liche, etc? Would I necessarily need any pets at all, even from the Nature tree?

Also, what is good attribute distribution at level up? All Int? I usually play hoplite style characters when I play this game in order to get my Greek myth fix, but would like to try something new.

liche and wolves are both very good pets, so you would be missing out.
but it should still be manageable.

for casters, go 3:1 int:dex until you have enough dex to wear top caster gear. then you can go with int and hp as you like.
