To play in 4k, should I turn upscaling off?

I have already set the resolution to 3840x2160, but I'm not sure if I should have upscaling set to on or off.

Upscaling reduces the internal resolution and upscales several, say, 720p framebuffers into a final 1080p picture, using "temporal reconstruction techniques" and other programming black magic that goes over my head completely.

Generally what it means is Upscaling improves performance significantly, at the cost of a slightly blurrier image.

Good luck getting the game run at native 4K resolution, what kind of beast system are you using?

Thanks for the info. I have a i7 6700k and a gtx 1080. The framerate was horrible with everything maxed (and it was a pain to find a program that worked with the win 10 dx12 version which is what I have). I ended up lowering a few settings to medium and high and turning off reflections and now I'm between 28-40 which works for me, but it's clear that the dx12 version has horrible optimization since I had much better performance in games like Rise of the Tomb Raider and Far Cry Primal which both look better (at least to me). I'm trying to decide if I should stick with this or go with upscaled and play at 60fps. I didn't think the graphical difference was huge at 4k with upscaling off, but I'm curious if people would recommend 4k at 30fps with some settings lowered or 60fps upscaled.

The upscaling effect is mostly noticable during camera movements. You can spot some stairstepping here or there, but may not really notice it because the camera is moving. Once you hold still to examine something, the game quickly puts together a crisper full-resolution picture using "temporal reconstruction", whoever that works. It's a fascinating effect, really.

Personally I am all for lower resolution if it means stable 60fps.

I am seriously considering buying the game a second time just to enjoy it stutter (sigh) free ;)

I did disable it, but thanks for the tip. I generally do that when playing at 4k to get better framerates.

I'm considering getting it a second time as well, though I'll probably wait until it's deeply discounted since I likely won't do a second playthrough for a long time.

If you're playing this game @ 4K you're going to have to keep Upscaling turned on, otherwise the performance hit will be too big for any current hardware to handle. I've tried this game with a Titan Xp and with everything maxed at 4K with Upscaling off I get like 10-25 FPS. With everything maxed and Upscaling On I can play the game perfectly locked at 30 FPS. I couldn't get the game to run at or above 60 FPS at 4K no matter what setting I tried (without dropping the resolution).
