most of the times i attack as first move: you will end up in the middle of the field and even if the enemy hits you it won't insta kill. defence is mostly usefull if you want to have a special move the next turn, it makes back you off witch is dangerous because most special moves have a long range. while you tilt the card you see a preview of the move, in some defences you just back off, but in some the king raises the shield making the move viable: it can block most sword attack(not every) and reflect that deam sword throw (treacherous hornet ifrc), the most dangreous move to use since it leaves you exposed and if shielded will backfire. All i can add is pratice: evetualy you will get a feel on what to do. and if you end up in the phungeon the seer might have told you something about a sword....
