so which is the best Stronghold?

A castle simulator sounds fun (I used to love Interplay's Castles game back in the 90's).

I see Stronghold 3 gets some pretty bad reviews but are the earlier games in the series worth checking out? Which one?

For Singleplayer I would recommend Stronghold 1, for Multiplayer it would be Strondhold Crusader

Stronghold Crusader was the best so far. It provided endless fun especially in the custom matches. The Campaign was never too good in my opinion in any of the Strongholds.

However, playing against the AI or friends really was fun. Especially tinkering with high/low walls and how to safely gather ressources and manage the economy was great.

However that remake that enabled you to have a lot more units at once kind of ruined it. Go with the original.

Since Crusader the series has gone downhill in my opinion. Stronghold 2 was okay, but it didn't feel as good anymore.

Stronghold Legends was riddiculous. Don't go for that one, it's no fun at all.

Stronghold 3 I've not played yet, but you barely get any video rev's so it's probably not as good either.

The Stronghold Collection is a good buy even though some of it is throwaway.

As others have said, probably crusader.

Only real issue was that the AI's lack of versitility in building could be exploited to build a garden over where their barracks/camp was to be built.

crusader was always my favourite. 2 was a pretty "meh" experience for me. I just thank god that I didn't buy 3 before I was able to see dogs climbing ladders along with the rest of the problems 3 had.

I've actually liked all of the stronghold games, but I have to say that the first Stronghold game, and Crusader are the only ones that do not feel buggy.

crusader was the best by far. It was a much better version of one. If you want more in-depth castle life style, 2 is pretty good, although it does have some downers. Legends was meh, it didnt really suck me in like crusader did

Likewise, Crusader is my fav, but Stronghold's campaign IS better. That being said, I honestly really enjoyed Stronghold 2, but that's probably because I like the 'social' upgrade (all the craziness happening INSIDE the castle).

Wasn't a huge fan of Stronghold 3, unfortunately.

Extreme sucks. Takes all the fun out the game and makes it non-stop tedium as it requires spamming of the extreme powers to survive. 1 is my favorite overall (the campaign is great), but Crusader is also very fun (campaign sucks, since it's just a string of battles with no real overarching objective, but it has a ton of new units and a bunch of new skirmish AIs). 2 is pretty decent if it's fully patched but....doesn't have quite the same magic, imo. Though if you can get into it, it can be quite fun. Legends is horribly dumbed down. the Arthur faction is pretty much stronghold 2 except with a bunch of heroes you can summon that do stuff, while Vlad and Siegfreid are basically tacked on and have no real strategies involved due to highly limited unit and production trees.

I tend to agree, Legends was my fav by far personally putting over 700 hours into it.

1 Legends

6 Crusader Extreme

Why? Legends was different and different was fun to me. Crusader was fun for multiplayer with family/friends and the trails where pretty epic. Stronghold 1 was the first and the single player campaign is still unparallelled imo. Stronghold 3 is like a better Stronghold 2 but with more bugs, SH3 took out all the 'unfun' concepts introduced in SH2 such as gong, rats, and crime which made me hate SH2. Crusader Extreme is all about throwing tens of thousands of units at each other and it almost completely ignores the economic aspect of the game because you get the bulk of your units for free.
