The game has great mechanics from the previous games - honor, sticks and gingerbread. The graphics was improved, interface was changed. Popularity system was changed. I should say - that's diversity. In my opinion stronghold 3 is better than crusader 2 and warlords. I think stronghold 3 doesn't deserve such bad marks reviews.
To be honest this game is actually good, unfortunately there are quite a lot of disappointments
No skirmish mode is a joke. The mechanics are simplified from Stronghold 2 (although I don't miss having to have gong pits, so I do like that that functionality was integrated with the apothecar). It's the only game in the series not to have a skirmish/kingmaker mode besides the original (which can be forgiven as its the first in the series). But to take away gameplay mechanics as well as the skirmish from the second? That's lazy. They aren't simplified in support of making a particular gameplay style more streamlined (like Legends made simplifications to support the fast paced combat in the game), it's just less complex.
Stronghold 3: Gold Edition was released several months after Steam Workshop came out in 2011. Considering that this game relied on Steam from the very beginning (even the original edition of Stronghold 3 on DVD-Rom required a steam account to play), and that Gold edition was released through Steam, it makes zero sense that there isn't steam workshop support for the user created maps.
There are other complaints I could type, but you can just read my review of the game on here if you want. But the biggest killer is the lack of skirmishes. Skirmishes allow you to enjoy the combat, economic , and castle building aspects of the game integrated together. Skirmishes let you utilize the full array of units and buildings the game has. Furthermore, skirmishes let you do all of this on a variety of maps. The campaigns are much more limited, feeding you slices of the total game at a time. To me this makes it all feel like a glorified demo.
One thing is for sure, this game is still going for 29.99 as of February 2022 which is asking a lot when this game is less than Stronghold 2 in every way but the graphics (which do look decent).
the multiplayer at the time i played was horrible, connection was very unstable to the point it got laggy when you were 5-10 minutes into the game so 1v1 was the only thing you could play without lag, 2vs2 was straight up unplayable.
the maps were extremely limited for multiplayer as well especially compared to stronghold 2 and older stronghold games.
all in all this was just a cash grab at 59,99 and not at all worth it especially since skirmish wasn't added that took away most of the replay-ability.
i pitty you for even hoping they will fix it, it's been out this long and these issues were there when i played week 1.
it wont ever be fixed, it's already 6ft under.
