It was marketed as a souls-like martial arts game when the singleplayer was just a tutorial for the multiplayer. Most players beat the campaign very quick and never really touched the pvp.

That, and apparently it wasn't that good at launch. Also, as good as it is, you have to admit... it is likely a pretty niche game.

It's pretty odd, though, if we think about how people spend big bucks on AAA titles that disappoint and fail every year. Guess it is all about advertisement in the end.

I agree 100% about advertisement ı learned abaout EXANIMA today (it was out since 2015..) and IMO it shouldve been more popular. Or project zomboid for that matter.

afaik exanima doesnt want to be popular (atleast now) i feel scammed by project zomboid cause i bought it on gog but cant play with steam people together lol (yea my fault im just a little salty bout that)
and absolver.. i preordered deluxe edition, i have a wooden mask and im very sad it didnt do so well lol
as said, i think main problem is that it was marketed as a souls like and people expected CONTENT but its basically a 1vs1 fighting game which would be for a different crowd but they probably dont even know about the game .(
i think its very unique game

I played this game from launch and I can give you a very clear answer. Launch was actually not that bad, gameplay was smooth and the playerbase was actually pretty good. The issue was that the developers seemed to have released the game earlier than expected(just my speculation) because it was as people say marketed as a souls based game. The issue with that is that after launch they really only did 2 updates that increased the amount of PVE content one could get from the game and it took like more than a year i think(even if im wrong it was a long time). Point being inbetween those updates the devs essentially took time to tweak the games bugs and add new styles and stuff to spice up PVP(which due to the short PVE content PVP is undoubtably ENDGAME regardless of how you play the game, however you can just jump right into it too, my point in this is that you eventually will want to play against other players instead of bots... after too long youll memorize bot patterns and itll just get boring so id think everyone would shift to pvp by then). The devs focusing on the PVP for so long, along with the AMAZING PVP gameplay the game offered kinda made the game's player base shift towards the Devs focusing on PVP more than the singleplayer content. However with the extremely infrequent updates and new content for both PVP and PVE, the game slowly died off in population over time as well as the fact that eventually the Devs decided to drop the project all together and not release or update the game any further years ago. The game play is still not bad and the game would be good with a large player base but the small amount of content just crippled it overtime.

Another HUGE factor was the fact that this game has a fairly big skill cap for new players PVP and PVE wise sometimes, a lot of new players saw people like Peeve playing and just jumped in thinking they'd smack abunch of kids around and well the combat system doesnt really allow for that unless the enemy is really a noob. The skill cap takes a sense of physical mastery with timing of your own deck and feints along with the intuitive aspect of anticipation of your opponent at all times of the fight. As someone who has like 75% of my friends list from this game i can say most of those people were new people i just found runing around after getting really good at the game and started helping them so this is why i say this.

Gold point is that the devs honestly never really appreciated how much of a gem this really was. Given they were a small dev team at the time so they could only do as much as they could do in a sense, the abandonment of the game was a heartbreak for the community trust that much atleast.
