Also, there's evidence that the game runs using a weird hybrid system that routes player-hosted data in an indirect loop between players via the server, instead of direct. This can produce the appearance of significantly higher ping than the real ping from you to the server. I don't know if this is the case or not, but it's been mentioned as a suspected reason for many issues. In particular, on the Asia servers, at a time when there were a lot of active players in Korea (server location), I connected to players local to the server and got quite smooth play experience from New Zealand. When connecting to a friend in Australia, the lag was game-breaking to the point that I'm pretty sure it would be best measured in seconds instead of milliseconds.
