Did you ever figure it out? I'm stuck right now because I can't figure it out - I've tried every button on my keyboard and mouse, I think?

Nah. You are apparently to click on the thing you carry above you head, but that just makes the character wander off or spin around.

Why on earth there isnt a "drop" button is just silly.

Press on the thing you're carrying and hold the button down for a second. That's what worked for me.
