How to do 3 player?

I saw a post online mentioning that one could have 2 controllers matched to 2 bots mixed with 1 controller matched to 2 bots to get you to a three player game. How do you do this?

3 people can play as 4 players but we only have 2 and 4 bot levels. So if you have 2 people you each can control 2 bots. If 3 people then 1 person needs to control 2 bots
