Sometimes these “crashes” maybe due to the computer heating up - laptops especially -, or the sound / video drivers being very old. So, like Darkness said, have your tried updating the drivers, you could also reinstall the game if you had not done that before.

Heat isnt an issue. Using xbox controllers but I dont think they are the cause of this issue.
(They do seem to unbind from characters in multi plyer games where I am not hosting though)
I would say its a graphics bug as it seem to happen most when there is a massive number of spells on the screen, BUT then why would a file constantly need to be reacquired?
are u using the "controller" in "steam settings"?
Just checking if it's a pure hardware issue, or might be related to Steam controller emulation too. I'd suggest enabling/disabling those supports to see if it makes any difference!
90% + of devs have always natively supported Xbox 360 gamepad on PC. It's the only gamepad you can fully count on for PC games.
Works perfect in Win XP, Win 7, Win 8.1 and Win 10.
One thing. Sony never made any official Windows driver, and is why their gamepads is far less supported.
