Does Equivalent Exchange work on gear?
Can it turn rare (blue) gear into epic (purple) gear? Is it worth using while farming gear (not crafting materials)? I assume it doesn't turn epic (purple) into legendary (red) or sets (gold).

If it does work for converting gear, how do I get Ray's power up to the point where she can kill same-level things while using Passion for Gold and The Golden City mastery sets?

Equivalent Exchange is an ability that you can activate. While active it has a chance (25% base or 75% with Passion For Gold equipped) to change any item the Alchemist obtains into a similar item. There is also a 5% chance to exchange the item for a higher level item, and another 5% chance of exchanging the item for a higher rarity item. Equipment will otherwise be exchanged with a piece of equipment that has the same level and rarity, and it can only be a piece of equipment you have crafted or have complete a mission where it shows up in. Gear items don't have a level, so they only rely on the rarity. Materials will be exchanged at a 1:1 ratio with a different material of the same rarity, or when you exchange for a higher rarity item, you will get 25% less material for each rarity it was increased. (75% for 1 rarity higher, 50% for 2, and 25% for 3)

The known categories of items that can be exchanged are weapons, armor, accessories, potions, tools(I think that gear, grenades, and other tool items are separate, but not 100% sure), and materials. Wrist Guards are considered armor and not accessories.

I don't think you can get Set items from Equivalent Exchange, and It would be difficult to get legendary equipment except from other legendaries. Shaking and Unstable Chemical Compound can help increase the damage of your attacks. I don't think you need the full Golden City for most farm, so that could get you some more slots.

There's literally no indicatation at all that you actually read my post before copy-pasting something from the gear farming guide (that I read before asking).

I didn't ask for the ability's description.

This is the only thing remotely close to what I'm asking about and I already read it in a guide. Restating this piece of information is not an answer to the question of how this information is applied in game.

This directly contradicts the paragraph that proceeds it.

I didn't ask about gear items. It could be inferred, but you didn't read anything to make inferences from.

Not only did I not ask about materials I went out of my way to exclude them.

Totally irrelevant and wouldn't be here if you read the post or didn't copy/paste a guide.

I explicitly did not ask about set items and legendaries. I went out of my way to explicitly exclude them by name.

So, since you literally just copy/pasted someone else's guide and didn't even read the question I'm left without an answer.

The 5% chance for "higher rarity" means exchanging blue -> purple, and as per the later paragraph applies to weapons/armor/accessories. They actually answered your question, you were just too busy being an ass to notice.

Such a tragedy that you cannot read.

An outright multi-level lie since there is no official discord, and I haven't attempted to join any fan-made ("community") discords. Interesting how you go straight from can't be arsed to even read a question, to making ♥♥♥♥ up about a poster, in literally one comment flat.
