Cease hostilities
Just found out the Scumbag Pope doesn't give this mission to both factions.. really? Or is it just a bug? Cause I could've sworn, early game I got harrassed by Sicily, we went to war and after I got cease hostilities and they attacked my city, Sicily got excommunicated..

But now, I just got attacked by both the Empire and Hungary while I was given a Cease hostilities mission and they did not get exommunicated. Granted, I lured them into an easy battle with 12 foot soldiers and 7 soldiers on my fleet :P But still, they attacked me and did not "cease hostilites".. Is that too minor a offense for the excommunication or am I the only one told to stand down, while they are still allowed to attack me? Seems kinda unfair..

I'm not an expert, but I know a couple things about this. As someone who's been almost constantly in the Danger-zone with the pope (at war with a minimum of three other catholics for almost my entire campaign, all of whom hate me and are allied with each other), I've found that the penalty for breaking a Cease Hostilities mission is a relation hit with the pope rather than being excommed immediately. If your relation is at I believe 2 crosses or lower you'll get excommunicated, otherwise you just lose favor. On one occasion I got a mission to stop attacking Norway for X amount of turns, they attacked me and got excommunicated.

This means one of two things (unless someone who knows more wants to jump in). Either the Pope just gives these missions to each side of a war pair randomly and they can coincidentally line up to be each side simultaneously, or HRE/Hungary had enough favor to get away with it. Do they have less favor now than you remember them having before, or some such?

Oh, and typically the Cease Hostilities mission is only meant for one person you're fighting, unless you get more than one mission at once. Are you sure you read it correctly? I don't wanna be rude, but you didn't specifiy who the mission you got was for so...

Hey, thanks for the reply.

I got the mission for both Hungary and the Empire at the same time.. I haven't baited them anymore into fighitng easy targets and the Cease mission only goes on for 2 more turns now. I'm at 4 crosses and me attacking a city of those two factions gives me a warning that it'll result in excommunication.

What you said about losing favor might be true, cause I think the Empire was at max crosses a few turns ago and is standing at only 8 now, not too sure about Hungary.

Also, in the early game where Sicily got excommunicated for breaking the ceasefire, I remember them being at low favor with the Pope in the first place, so I guess getting excommunicated only happens when already at low favor to begin with.

Thanks for the help :)

Edit: I'll sacrifice some more men of mine and bait the Hungarians into fighting them, I'll check if they lose favor with the big man.

While both factions can get this mission from the Pope, you don't necessarily get them at the same time. Generally it's based around where most of the fighting is taking place I think. So if it's mostly in the enemy territory, you'll be told to back off. If it's the AI coming into YOUR territory (I think they have to attack you), then they will get the message.

There are a few notes:
- Factions on good relations with the Pope may not necessarily be immediately told to cease hostilities.
- Read over the mission you're given; sometimes the penalty is only losing diplomatic standing with the Papal States, other times it's actually excommunication. When you go to attack an enemy force, it will tell you that "you will be excommunicated". Go back and check the mission you received to be sure. I think it's less than 4 or 5 crosses means you'll get the excommunication mission.
- I do believe that if the enemy has armies in YOUR territory, you are allowed to attack them even with the cease hostilities mission. Note that you do not own the ocean, so ANY naval engagement will get you in trouble.
- If you're taking settlements off them, you are the one being aggressive, hence you receive the mission. :P

If you're concerned about being excommunicated, train up an assassin and sit him around the Rome region... if the Pope dies, you are reconciled instantly. Because the Pope isn't generally an especially good general, a top-grade assassin wouldn't have too much trouble doing his business.

Another thing to watch out for as far as being seen as the aggressor is to be careful of troops outside being set in wooded areas. If your army is set in an ambush position, when enemies run into them and battle triggers, you will be seen as an agressor if you battle.

tip:if you really want to get your hands on a city, bring along some seige equipment and attack immediatly
you wont get the "cease hostile" message until the next turn..to late for them
which faction are you playing?
just by the way,it matters some what

Well.. after the first two missions ran out I got a new batch of missions, telling me to stand down vs Hungary, the HRE and Milan, basically telling me to stop all my ongoing wars, so... I'll just get exommunicated then, send an assassin down to Rome and hope for the best :) If I'm extra lucky my Cardinal might even get elected as Pope so I get a bit more favor (for some time at least)

I'm playing as Venice. And yes, I'm the aggressor, taking settlement after settlement so it could be plausible I'm the only one told to stand down :D

This is regarding the RTS-part of the game, right? Afaik there's no way to ambush in the map screen, or is there?

You might want to train up your assassin on some easy targets first (low-level agents, captains, etc.) to gain some experience. You'll need a fairly high level assassin to actually kill off the Pope, but once you've got one, it's super handy to keep him around. And if the next Pope doesn't like you, who's to say he too won't meet a similar fate...? :P

You're tearing apart your enemies and you're surprised the Pope is calling you out on it? :P

If your army is sitting in some trees on the campaign map (and will be kneeling down if "hidden") and an enemy army passes next to it, there is a chance of ambushing the enemy. They don't get to prepare a defense in that case. The same happens to you if you come across any "hidden" armies in the trees as yours walk by.

to many battles
you lose a cross every battle against other good favour catholic factions
do you pay the pope?
you can buy a cross every turn
to cut down on battles so i can get cities i will even bring 3 odd large armies to "push back" the enemy armies so i can get at thier city
you know, that first engage that they break off

I have found that if you dont want those missions period. try to get traderights or an allience with the papal states. If you do so you will have almost maximum crosses an you wont get excommunicated and then no problems witth the pope. or you can go crusading and then the pope will like you then you wont even get those cease fire missions!

♥♥♥♥ the catholic church. If you could only hear the conversation I hear right now.

How was your relations with the Vatican? I quit playing Medieval 2 Total War a long time ago.

Just side with the Muslims/Islam. I wouldnt want to be part of christendom either if all these families at the top kept doing that. Make allies with Ghangis Khan.

Oh youre only at 4 crosses with relations with the Vatican and the opposing factions are at max crosses? Yeah Pope will most likely side with the other Royal family.

Get ready to be excommunicated from the Roman Catholic Church.

Is the Vatican any different from the Roman Senate House in Rome Total War? Just something to think about. Alls they did was build a church on top of the Senate House right? (did they talk about this in Assassins Creed with the Temple of Juno?)
I think you may have included some of your own prejudice against the RCC here... :P
But I have thought it would be cool to be able to break from the Church like during the Reformation. Sure, it'd mean you weren't the same religion as other Catholic rulers, but the Pope's voice would hold little sway over your lands anymore. It'd likely still be a pretty turbulent time as you crossed over, but thought it'd be a fun aspect to add to the game.
