Fix For Fatal Graphics
ok, what i did was opt into the beta, not sure if thats required. then look into the root folder for medieval. find medieval2.preferences.config change where it says 1024 768 to 1920 1080 in both places. or whatever your native resolution is.,

The Beta is not required, actually this little Bastard is correct on this one for once in his life haha and this fix does work. Be sure to manually adjust the resolution within the games video settings also otherwise you will be playing at the lower resolution. Shame that there is less information on other problems people are facing.

I've looked through the C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Medieval II Total War\preferences file and there's no .config file. only player.txt with nothing in it. Any idea on how I can change the resolution manually?

This is the file you are looking for [medieval2.preference] its a cfg. file. Open it with your notepad and you will see a short list of values, change both the battlefield and campaign values to your native resolution (mine is 1920 1080). after typing in the new value go to file at the top of the dialog box hit save then exit. Open Steam right click medieval2 and play whatever version you like. Remember to change the resolution within the game settings after you load the game. Im am sorry this is the only way I know of for now. If you follow this perfectly this will fix the fatal graphic error

The mistake you are making is that you are accessing the preference folder which is not where you want to be. Further down the list you will see individual files this is where you will find [medieval2.preference.cfg]. Hope this helps

Hmmm, there are only .DLL files in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Medieval II Total War folder with the exception of the .EXE and a .VDF. Could it be in a different location? Also, would it be possible to define resolution through 'Set Launch Options' in steam?

Hah, I figured it out. I just changed my desktop resolution to 1024 x 768, which was the resolution the game kept trying to start in. Then I set the resolution in the game to match my desktop. Then I exited the game, set my desktop resolution back to normal, and now it works. Not the most technical or graceful solution, but it works.

Thanks for the responses.
