Third Age: Total War mod
I'm playing as the dwarves, building and managing my settlements, when I decide to go kill the Orcs of the Misty Mountains and the Gundabad Orcs, I move my army out of Erebor and that castle east of it and find that if I don't have my units in the settlements with free upkeep, I go bankrupt. So I'm stuck because I need more settlements for money, but the free unit upkeep is the only thing keeping me afloat. Plus the units I have barely make a 20 stack so I can't just disband a few and be fine. Any ideas?:Currency:

Move a smaller army to within range of the settle you want to take, recruit as many mercenaries as possible, take the settlement then disband them. You will only pay recruitment cost and if done within the one turn you won't have to pay the upkeep.

That's why early game economy and expansion is very important, get peace with as many nations as possable and trade, then take as many rebel settlements as possable. Building farms and mines as the Dwarves is a good idea, since mines cause population growth. But yeah, the advice above is good as well: especially if you're using the MOS submod. Dwarves can usually kick the teeth out of Orc/goblin units, so you shouldn't need a full army early on.

Thanks for the advice, and I realize now that dwarven units would beat goblin/ orc units badly, looking at their units that make the bulk of their armies makes me laugh when I compare them to the basic dwarven warrior :) Only danger is being swamped by all the extra men they have.

I wouldn't even worry about getting swamped. A simple tactic for infantry with the dwarves is split your units into 2 lines (the front line should have 2 less units than the back, so either 2 in front and 4 in back, 3 in front and 5 in back, 4 in front and 6 in back etc..). Have your front line attack and once engaged, send 1 unit on the edge of your back line to hit the enemy flanks. This will either let you rout the end of the enemy line fast and then let your edges start pushing towards the middle, or contain the edges if they end up with a lot of units. Once your main line starts to tire, send in your reserve line to give an extra push (or flank with the reserve line and box the enemy in. This is a little riskier, but if you do it when you're sure you'll win, you can ill just about every enemy soldier without risking them escaping).

I've found that dwarven infantry is OP as hell even on Hard, I'm winning battles with 300 some troops against 1500 orcs o.0 Of course, they're Snaga but still.

thats pretty much all the good races. Evil gets ton of horrible units, except isengard and evil men, who can go toe to toe with anything but dwarves and elves. The ai sucks somewhat against evil, just because it doesnt understand how good chokepoints are, but a good player can slaughter massive ammounts as long as you play defensive.
