Unlock and build higher level buildings?
I can see in the building browser that there are higher level buildings I can construct, but when I mouse over them they are not available yet. All my buildings are finished so that nothing remains in the construction panel besides the option to convert to a castle/town. When does the higher level of construction unlock?

Use the 'Retrain' tab in the build menu to buy fresh replacements for a unit at a location with the correct recruitment capability; so for example you can only 'retrain' knights at a Castle that can recruit knights.

You cannot retrain units you cannot build at a location and sometimes these are restricted further by population level and circumstances (if you have just taken a town you can't recruit on the first turn for example).

Might be dependent on mods, too? I know when I took casualties to one of my top-tier units gifted to you at the beginning of a TATW game, they slowly replenished; I wasn't able to retrain them, at least not at that point in my game.

Yeah I know how to retrain, but all it did was up my units stats

If you were playing the unmodded game, then the reason the unit didn't get more soldiers in it is because that city could only upgrade weapons, armour and/or experience in that settlement, because the settlement could not produce that unit type - either because it lacks the appropriate building, or because none are available at that time. You can check this by using the tab for producing NEW units, and see what appears there. If you mouse over greyed out units, the game will tell you why you can't produce them at that time.

+1 to CHE

Also some mods deliberately limit recruitment availability, so replacements aren't easily obtained or because the max number of units the settlement can produce has been reached and it cannot produce any more, or replenish additional units, even though they are the same type.

There only so many units available for recruitment at a given time. If all units of a particular type have been recruited at that particular castle/city, then you can not retrain.

idk thats for a different forum but make sure you are running the game with your high performance processor not the integrated graphics card
I will assume you have vanilla.

Retraining with the proper settlement/units is the only way to go, besides merging.

vanilla? you mean excluding kingdoms? I got the kingdoms expansions, is it different there?
GrandHardy Mar 30, 2015 @ 6:56am
By vanilla he means unmodded, kingdoms has the same recruitment as normal medieval 2 except for a culture requirement.

It merely gave an armour upgrade because the settlement you chose to retrain cannot train the specific unit. Try a castle if it was a city, or a city if it was a castle, and be sure to have the proper building.

Okay it seems to be working now, retraining in the castle is replenishing my units. idk if it wasn't working earlier because of an upgrade or something

You sure it isn't different now because you waited at least one turn, so that settlement's unit pool replenished?
