It will work off-line as a PC desktop game however, but you won't be able to use it for OLBs or Multiplayer via a Steam account.
Always keep the disc copy. Some older mods run off the disc version, so you can still use them with a DVD Disc.
NOTE: Because the Kingdoms expansion uses core game elements from the Medieval II: Total War game, it is required that you use the same method for purchasing Kingdoms as you did in purchasing Medieval II: Total War. If you purchase Medieval II: Total War from Steam, then please use Steam to purchase Kingdoms.

It's called putting your medieval 2 CD key on steam.
Gold Edition Disk version of MTW2 and Kingdoms, the serial gives you both when you add to steam, that is for those that are not sure.
Med 1 was ♥♥♥♥, seriously don't waste your money on it if your thinking of it, med 2 was the solution because it was so bad. Sometimes i think the forums are full of peeps trying to sell something.

hmmm yeah well funny how its on the back of the 89-page manual, maybe u got it from pirate bay or summut. ;)
Seriously, if you don't have Medieval II or Kingdoms now is your time!!
