why is Romania (the byzantine empire) so weak

first time i tried medieval 2 mods it was because i got really bored with other total war games and their mods.i usually try and play a eastern roman/byzantine faction to gauge the quality of the mod and so far ive tried Tsardoms,Broken Crescent, and fall of Constantinople.and each of them have really big flaw when it comes to depicting this faction. one that they are similar in is that they are very weak in some way. and often their is never a way to get around this. it feels very characteristic for someone who studies their history. so i was wondering is if someone had any other mods i could try?
