Why do nobles sometimes die in battle when they did not die in battle??
Always wondered this?

I get no report of my general dying during the battle.
After the battle, i get a message about a 'noble death'??

No, but you got me thinking..... Usually i get told when my "foolish general throws his life away"..... but not if its a noble who is not the general.... that could be the problem i think?

But i should still get an in battle report if a noble who is not the general gets killed right? One of those box drop down reports on left side of screen, i should get the report there right?? This is the report i sometimes do not get during the battle, so i have no idea he died until after the battle.
If he is not the leading general then you will not get any death notification during battle. You should however get the standard 'died in battle' death notice afterwards, eg the 'slide down button'.
That one is always possible to overlook, especially if you still have some of them at the side.

They definitely should be getting the box on the left, even if it is a secondary general. I have definitely got that notification before.

Yeah, this is what i thought too.... but it does sometimes happen that i do not get an in battle notification.

I suppose i could make a point of splitting my armies noble units out before combat, like i do when combating rebels so my nobles won't get demoted.

Later on in the game, auto calc is my best friend - almost never get a noble stupid death.

Totally agreed, it's however possible to miss that notification - I think it's 'sliding down' animation has finished before the loading screen closes, eg one is back on the strat map.

I didn't quite understand what you meant?

The situation where i did not get the notification that prompted this thread was as follows;

I had a hard battle taking a city.... a large portion of my soldiers decided to take a detour to a ladder instead of going through the gate i had expected them to go through.... which in itself is not surprising, i should know the level of hand holding required to get soldiers from A to B in a non STUPID direction, but suffice to say, i failed to notice in this instance.

Wound up slugging it out in the city centre with far more enemy units than anticipated because of the ladder detour delay. My noble body guard units took a hell of a beating,,, i was half expecting to lose a noble, but i was lucky, and that did not occur and i won the battle.

After the battle i was then notified of a 'noble death'

It really irritated me, i definitely did not get a notification of a noble death during the battle.

Ok, did this happen during your turn or the AI's turn? Meaning did you initiate the battle or did the computer?

1) It would be unusual for someone to be using ladders during a sally out
2) My troops are not going to be in a position where they would prefer using a ladder over an open gate during a sally out.

So, yes, i have initiated the combat.

I was just wondering if the noble died in between your turns.

Ah, i get your point, did he die of old age?
But no, i don't use nobles that approach 60, since they are basically dead men walking, especially if they are a king who always seem to die of old age the first second it is possible to do so, but meanwhile diplomats and merchants always seem to live on quite a while longer. (This discrepancy in the game has not gone unnoticed by me)
