Trebuchet vs cannon in field battle
What, if any, is the advantage of a cannon over an trebuchet in open field battle?

Cannons damage walls alot more but since your talking about open field battles then the only other advantage is that it is more accurate than a trebuchet. So its more likely to hit the targeted enemy unit.

Well depending on who your playing as you want to look beyond 1st cannnon to the rest you get. Forgot which nation, but one of the bombards of thiers can grapeshot. Most factions have many more advanced cannons as well. Basilisks are the biggest and meanest, and can fire 3/4 of the way across the field. Culverins and thier like are more accurate, and many varieties have exploding rounds (shrapel). Personally I never build trebuchets, balista, catapult. I tend to just tough out without siege (or siege good old wall taking way), until gunpowder, by which time I;ve built up a killer economy. Then I;m pre prepared to build my cannons (as well as selling the conquered siege shops off can help make ends meet economically early).

Ok, thank you for the answers. Currently I am playing as turks and I guess I will stick with the trebuchets for blocking bridges and my field armys. (Since they can also shoot the nice cows)

trebuchet can be usedful wen defending a siege since it arc over wall + it lauch the cow like listed above but are quite innacurate (managed on a lucky shot to kill a general with a cow to it face). On a side note try using a monster ridbau barrage shot during a siege on a packed street carnage assured.

I don't think they are very useful when defending against siege, since they won't be able destroy the enemys catapults, and when attacking siege towers they often hit my own wall, so I prefer to tacke another infantry unit instead.
The main advantages the Trebuchet has are 1) it's cheaper 2) it can fire over city walls 3) they can fire cows. The Cows believe it or not are really useful because they help break the enemy. Fire on them while the enemy is advancing and they're hit with a permanant negative morale modifier before anyone's dead. They're more useful than simply killing the enemy.

Well then you just use calvary if fighting against the AI. The AI just marches its catapults up ahead undefended, so if you assault them with calvary it's easy pickings.
