You won't get excommuniated for defending yourself

France will get excom soon, fight defensively

Sometimes they do it just to cause you to be excommunicated, it can be unavoidable in certain scenarios. I git invaded as Scotland last year but then I was the one excommunicated for maintaining the siege of my capital to try and get it back! Mad Pope's are the worst.

Just retire your army to your cities and then fight off the attackers. Either 1 they will be excommunicated or 2 you'll simply finish the mission.

Tip: Watch diplomacy stuff to see who is allied with your enemies to make sure your ready for their allies to attack.

Just get excommunicated, you'll have better relations with the pope once you've annihilated every other Catholic faction. Also the freedom to do whatever you like.

When you're expansionist you're probably going to eventually get excommunicated anyway. I mean it's still possible to get the Pope's favor back if you have the money or the ability to kill Pope's who don't like you until one of your Cardinals is elected Pope. In my latest playthrough I was excommunicated for attacking Hungary. I had done the most I could to antagonize them with the Papacy, they got excommunicated for attacking me and I called a Crusade on them. But their King died so it all went away. They were a real nuiscance so I just went through with it, the Pope told me to stop attacking them, I didn't listen so I was excommunicated. Then in their final city I sent my King in to die so that at the end I was reconciled and the Pope couldn't tell me to stop attacking Hungary. Then I focused on fighting the Mongols in Eastern Europe, playing defensive against other Catholic factions and building as many Huge Cathedrals as I could. Now I'm back to most favored status.

Want to know how you don't get excommunicated from the Church? Obey the pimp Pope, and uh err, control the Church with priests.

When the pope demands a ceasefire between two nations, the nation that is fighting battles in their enemies territory will get excommunicated. Every battle you initiate in your own territory doesn't count as "excommunication".

So if they are besieging your castles, crush them with all your might. Remember, They are the attacking force, you're the defending force.

That's not true, I got excommunicated as Scotland in Scotland by being attacked by HRE.

Often an enemy fleet action initiated by the other side will trigger excommunications too.

If you play in defence, and wait for france to engage on your cities, gathering a big enough army to defend, you could find the result turning to France becoming excommunicated, whilst then beiing allowed to destroy their attacking army. Situations such as this are a serious bonus to luring opponents out of favour with the pope, which can also also allow you to crusade on France, turning a few other cathlic factions against them.

Destroy their religious buildings, assassinate their priests, Assassins are useful.
