CD Version to Steam?
Hi, I've had the CD version of M2TW Gold Edition ever since it came out. Recently, my CDs have become very scratched. It takes forever to boot the game, its a pain to uninstall, then reinstall it every time I feel like playing some M2 (And I keep putting the 2nd disc in the dumbest of places, losing it entirely) and the Crusades campaign wont install due to the state of the 2nd disc. I tried to put in my CD key on steam a year or two back, but I couldnt register the game to steam. Is there any way someone could help me get my copy of Gold on steam? I know the entire collection is like 5 bucks on sale, but I want to take this $&!@ back to the middle ages NOW!

I also have the CD version. I went to 'ADD A GAME...' at the bottom left corner. Click on 'Activate a Product on Steam', enter your CD code. TW recently allowed this because Gamespy went down. If it worked for me, it'll work for you. Try it again.

There are no-cd patchs out there, used to use them myself until bought another copy on Steam.

What patches?

Try :
http://www.gamecopyworld.com/games/pc_medieval_2.shtml
for a 'no cd' patch.
You install as normal, install the patch and no longer need to insert the disc to play.

'and the Crusades campaign wont install due to the state of the 2nd disc'
Try a disc polisher(about £10-15), unless it has deep scores, that recovers most discs.

Not sure why Steam has censored the address, just type Medieval 2 no cd patch into a decent search engine.

Yep, putting the CD key in again worked. Thanks for letting me know Blackout.

No problem! Always happy to help! I just figured this out a week ago.

Confirmed working, just activated the Gold Edition and received the Definitive Edition on my account. Tried this years ago and it didn't work, happy that it does!
That's great news! Glad it worked out!
Remember, using the cd key through steam set's you up for all updates without questioning the site (my cd's didn't work anymore on new comp) PLUS you get later content that was made free after purchase!

I had Rome, Barbarian invasion and Medeival... but through steam I got all the free expansions.

The only version that gets updated is the Feral Interactive version for linux/mac

Is there any difference between the boxed gold edition and the definitive edition ?

I've been using an ancient install on a slave drive for many years. It's just a pain to load the dvd. Then again I have other games not redeemable on steam that also require discs.

I don't really want to use cracks as the new code has a propensity to make games more unstable and potentially hinder performance.

One reason why I am hesitant to redeem it on steam, is that my install has been extensively modded and tweaked, meaning I'd need another separate install from steam and redo all the work.

Anymore, I don't think there is any difference between Gold and Definitive. Definitive is something CA did recently for older titles where they allowed everyone to have the DLC free. In this case, Kingdoms.

You will have to reinstall it regardless for the Steam version, even if you already have it installed.

Ahh ok. I guess there is no real point in redeeming it. Maybe I should just try to make a 1:1 image file so I can play without the disc. Right now I have a dvd-rom drive hanging out of the side of my case lol.

Yeah, the only real advantage to having it on Steam is the ability to still play multiplayer. lmao, it's weird that they aren't even bothering putting optical drive slots in case towers anymore.

Yeah, I wish there were more options for modern cases with drive bays. I totally regret buying this NZXT case for that reason. I also have a HDD sitting on a foam block under my GPU because it won't fit anywhere else..

Luckily I have a Cosmos II case, but the system inside has issues. My new build will definitely be going inside it.
