If you have modded your game at all, you will need a complete reinstall of the vanilla and mod. TATW for example overwrites some core game files and is not fully mod foldered.
And now I shall wait for someone to come in and say they never had a problem.
*head explodes*
I had this exact problem but it is now fixed.
I was running up to date M2TW on steam with Stainless Steel 6.4 and no other mods. im on win7 the entire time.
randomly on a campaign at turn 40something as England the game crashed with the generic "m2tw has encountered an unspecified error and will exit" or some bs excuse similar to that
i had been playing this game + mods probably for about 2 years+ with few problems and ive been playing m2tw with other mods for 4+ years on top of that so i was surprised.
so fix the crash i did this:
deleted all trace of SS manually from folders via windows explorer, i didnt use the SS uninstaller
i kept all of my saves from my game mentioned above, i just copied them to desktop
once ss was gone i used steam to verify integrity of game cache for m2tw+kingdoms, i have the bundled version of the game i guess
it said 407 files needed replacing, i let it do that
i didnt re-download ss6.3 because i still had it on my HDD but i did re d/l the 6.4 patch because i couldnt find it on my documents, i got the 6.4 patch right from links on total war centre: TWC (where else)
i then checked my directories and found that i had a version of ss6.3 installed in the default sega folder... so C:/programs(86x)/sega....or something similar to that. so i deleted all that ♥♥♥♥.
once all that was gone i staretd installing ss6.3 and made sure i put it in the right steam location which is c: programs : steam: steamapps: common: m2tw or something similar to that
sorry my // forward slash key has something mad sticky under it so i cant use it properly because i have to pry it up each time and i cant be bothered to clean this retarded keyboard. but the directory is in there and if you are using mods you muyst somehow now what you are doing otherwise you wouldnt be this far.
i installed 6.3 then installed the patch then copied my old saves to the 6.4 folder which was in the srteam directory as normal and i launched the game with the installers shortcut that gets put wherever and i ran the game and it was fine, i could progress past the previous crash.
basically doing a clean-ish install fixed my problem which is probably what 99.9% of you have already done.
the only other thing i can add is to watch out for errant installs under c: proggrams : sega or something like that to make sure ss6.3 isnt installed there and somehow its not reading your copy of kingdoms or ss6.3 or whatever and its causefing cvrahses.
io hoepe if any one is sreaching wherever that they find their solution and if in 10 years time sonoene is doing what i am doing now whoch is use search eninges to truy and find a soluton and then you fin d a p[ost and it says "hey i have the exact same problem:" and its form a guy in 2004 on an dead forum and you are like " oh man why did nobvody anser him" yeah wekll this is that now
also i have to say "it works form e" is absolute cancer and you should all die because it is only 1 step worst than " hey guys it works now" inbut doesmnt say the fix.
i saw your hands got tired there at the end

Not only is the last reply in this thread from 4 years ago, your suggestion is also useless because a verification would not touch any mod files and a re-install is already suggested in the very first reply 6 years ago
