Monopolies
I'm trying to figure out monopolies. I had read about the Monopolist trait, which is described here:
http://totalwar.honga.net/traits.php?v=m2tw&f=england&c=merchant

From what I understood at the time I thought that having one of my merchants be the only merchant in a given region trading a given resource would eventually grant them this trait. But looking at this again it looks like if I had done it correctly they would already have it.

Can anyone explain how it works? Does he have the be the only merchant in the region or the only merchant in the world with that resource? I'm thinking too that none of my other merchants can be on that resource in that region for this to work - am I right?

The region has to have at least 2 of that resource in, and you have to be the only nation in that region trading it to be considered as having a monopoly.

I believe you have to be trading both same commodities in the region for it to take effect.

It's ok to just own the one. Just as long as no other nation has a spot on the other resources, you're set.
Just remember that the first level of the trait takes 5 turns to get, and that you're free to bounce around to other monopolies of resources and still retain progress for the trait.
