Downloading game

Does anyone know if it's legal or not to download a game from torrent site if you already bought the game and have the physical copy (assuming no seeding, just download)? I bought the original version of M2TW back when it released but my current PC has no CD-reader. And honestly the game is buried deep within boxes in the attic. I'm not buying something I already have. Advice please

It's for sure illegal and you can use the physical copy key to own the game on steam

ok thanks, I did some more digging on the internet and it's not very clear if it's ok or not. The best clarification I could find is that it's not illegal to download what you already have but it's illegal to upload and based on how torrenting works it's impossible to download without also do some uploading, even if you turn off seeding in the client. So in any case I would have to get up to the attic and find the f*kin box just to be safe and if I have to do that I might as well redeem the code somehow. If it works on steam, it's the original version and not this "definitive edition"

A lot of people do it because the consequences are almost always nil especially if you're not hosting the illicit copies. If you make that choice, it's yours, but it's one of those 'we don't talk about it' deals in any place legally scrupulous because you can be struck for it. There's not case law that I'm aware of behind this but I do know the idea that you can pirate what you already own is not legally sound and you wouldn't want to be the one who tries it in court.

It can be infinitely less convenient to jump legal hoops for perfect compliance so again, that's a choice we can't make for you.

People used to download cracked executable files in those days of yore when games came on CDs simply because there was always a chance of messing the CD up as it was required to be inserted when playing. Not really an issue if you own the game.

As I've said a few times, It's in a box in the attic and it would be faster to download it than getting up there and searching for it. That's why I didn't "just" use the cd key. The issue has been solved now in any case, I won't say how XD
