If that doesn't work. Check to see if the game made a file called medieval2.preferences.cfg.
If it did create said file, make sure the resolution stated in the file are correct with your desktop. Do note that resolutions higher than 2k are simply not recommended for this game due to it being 13 years old so its best to keep resolution down to 1080p.
Should you lack that file then you can find it here; https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NGzoBECdRD9JpkdBcb1AbtbD80S5wPvI8SCgn0Dyt_k/edit
Open a notepad file, copy paste it in there, make sure you set the following lines with the correct resolution;
battle_resolution = 1280 768
campaign_resolution = 1280 768
and then save the file as medieval2.preference.cfg (.cfg is the extension) and paste the file into your steam/steamapps/common/medieval 2 folder.
Basically the game is wanting to create something, like the medieval2.preference.cfg and windows is like" ♥♥♥♥ no" and shuts it down.
So make sure you're allowed to do stuff on your C drive or simply install steam on a seperate partition (if you have it + have the space for it)
Start at point three if you are familiar with the principle
