Ballista, catapults, and other siege engines do not destroy walls in real life. They suppress defenders from attacking the men trying to scale or destroy the foundation of the walls.
on topic: send some cavalry to kill them.
Personally, I never used any ballista because its too slow and I need to conquer the whole world.
the few times I tried it, ballista was too slow at killing the towers. if you are patient enough you might be able to kill all towers and then assault with ladders but meh.
I have to disagree with you though: if ballista is for walls, then what is catapult for? Ballista should be good vs soldiers.
Trebuchets on the other hand...
Like the Warwolf built by Edward I of England during the Siege of Sterling Castle. It could throw stones weighing more than 135 kilos (300lb) which demolished a section of the curtain wall.
Have you even try it? The problem with that is that Balista fires too damn fast, so it will destroy your cavalry before they even get there. And even if they got there, they would be absolutely wrecked by the Balista's operators. After all, peasants are the best infantry in the game.
Never had a problem with it. Rushing ballistas is easy.
What? Rushing Balistas is easy? Hahahahahahah, no. It is hard as ♥♥♥♥. You will probably lose your cavalry if you charge a single Balista. Only change to destroy Balista is with the most awesome and overal best infantry in a game: Peasants. Otherwise, if enemy brings Balista, you lose. You just lose. There's nothing that you could do. And that's why Balista should be nerfed into a ground.

^That.
And like all barely movable equipment it can be overrun, preferably by light, fast cavalry.

I lost 6 Light cavs and 2 heavy fued knights.
but that was 5 cavs vs 3 ballistas, and they had no army to back them up LOL.
but I always send some cavs for ballista yes.
HOWEVER, I played only on hard, not very hard. Its my first playthrough so there might be another optimum strategy.
what if they had spear ment to protect them?
you mean it kills leader always? my leader died from catapult rock.
me too.
unliss you are sacked or exterminated by a dreadlord xD
Who in their right mind charges them head on? They are behind enemy lines so you have to go around anyhow....
If the other side has a siege engine in a battle then never leave your leader stationary - odds are he will be targeted.
also, during siege, if I already broke the wall, I tried bringing ballista but I killed 6 spear men in friendly fire. seems like ballista is useless inside settlements.
so, is the use of ballista in normal battles similar to the use of archers in terms of friendly fire? If I target further enemies which are not in contact with mine would that not hit my units?
is there a way to count friendly fire losses?
Edit: it is actually not that useful even in siege because the damage is very low. Catapults are much better.
sometimes ballista damage on wal is just 1% LOL
also, in difficult terrain, sometimes I cant even damage walls unliss I come close. However, if I come close AI will bring his units and my ballista will die to arrows. so it is better to just use rams, ladders, and siege towers tbh.
