I quite like bretonnia too. It feels a little bit short after England is defeated but it's pretty well made. You really get to feel in charge of the war effort, whichever faction you play.
Americas I really didn't try much. But it doesn't suit my playstyle much because I like building big cities, and I think the limited troop numbers was a thing too. Mostly because no replenishment (IIRC) so you gotta be very careful.
Overall I find em all pretty good. It's a good DLC.
Yes, same engine, some different units and mechanics, smaller but different games.
When you click in the play button, it will say play medieval 2 definitive edition (that's the vanilla) or it'll ask you to choose between Americas, Teutonic, Britannia and Crusades.
The Vanilla has a little tutorial for battle and campaign but I believe the campaign one is bugged.
Alternatively clicking the desktop icon immediately launches vanilla.
Each expansion is not necessarily a new game but the overall setting is changed, factions added, the map changes and units and mechanics are added.
Each little expansion has its own little menu screen and musical theme which are quite good IMO.
Thanks again Disciple (and Lea)...that's helpful. Seeing that screen with the options threw me at first; I didn't start a campaign but just looked around. So, basically, if I had thought about the game play with someone other than the "big guys" (England, France, HRE), so like Denmark, then I should just play the Teutonic one...or if a smaller faction from the British Isles, play Brittania? I had not really done too much research before getting M2, but I think I was assuming it started in or around the 500s. I had actually thought it would be fun to play as Saxony or the Franks....but now (after seeing some other players), I think that option (Saxony, or the 500s) is the Rome:Attila game. LOL Oh well....I still will be diving in soon on a campaign.
The battles on the kingdoms expansions are a bit harder IMO. They tend to be big scale battles right away. Some starting positions are also a bit harder, say, the Teutonic order.
In vanilla you get to play as England, Venice, HRE, france, Spain and Portugal IIRC? To unlock all the factions you have to destroy that particular faction in game or win a campaign (long or short it doesn't matter)
I think England is the best starting faction to learn the game. Securing the British isles is easy and you only have to deal with scotland. The position is easily defensible. The roster is solid however and the one thing they lack you can compliment with mercenaries. Plus all those archers you can experiment with different formations and such.
In general the most "complete" campaign, in my opinion, is the Teutonic.
There is plenty going on in it. I find it can be really enjoyable playing factions like HRE or Poland.
