Thats odd. Normally rebels would be destroyed when they lose a battle, or did you retreat after wiping his army?
The princesses show their custom picture on the family tree and they are only the daughters of the king and I think the prince*, Although I'm not sure about the prince.
Edit. It's brilliant really. Usually a full stack would cost a lot, but keeping the general only would dramatically decrease the cost. Specially good ones like Wallace.
It also spares your princess (if you have one) from a failed attempt. So you can bribe until they accept and then marry with 100% chance, securing his sucession.
I find princesses really hard or borderline impossible to build up and they usually just lose charm over time. So a marriage proposal to a foreign general more often than not fails.
Princesses keep their portrait in the family tree.
