Not working for Mac??
Hey. Is anyone else having this problem and know how to solve it? I posted in the Mac forum but it isn't used as much so I am posting here as well. A couple of days ago my total war games were working fine. I have Medieval II and Shogun II. However now as soon as I press the play button the icon stops bouncing. I have OS 10.13.6 and have tried deleting steam, reinstalling the games and with medieval I have tried the beta version. Ive spent a lot of time and money in these games and don't want that to go to waste.

Possibly something to do with the game's setting (see mentioned XML file) that forces an updated OS version:

An update by Feral to the Linux version of M2TW instructs user to update their OS (to 10.14) by way of being incompatible.

Not everyone wants to update so here is a relatively simple fix:

The file to edit is "/Users/yourusername/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Medieval II Total War/Medieval II Total War.app/Contents/Resources/specifications.xml".

Make a back up copy, just in case.

Search for "10.14" in there, and take out the surrounding blocks, which also have comments about blocking the game based on OS version, they should be obvious. Then run the game.

Thanks. I tried to find the file you are talking about but don't know where it is. I have gone to finder but it isn't there.

That's surprising - that path and file is standard for Mac: Contents/Resources/specifications.xml

I have got no MAC (just quoted the advice), but if you can upload that file I'll have a look what could be meant.

I copied the info from the link underneath, the author should be able to clarify (I don't have a Mac): https://steamcommunity.com/app/4700/discussions/0/1735468693705113031/

Here is the alternative I posted there (info from Feral):

Players using a version of OS X before 10.14 can access a compatible version of the game via the Beta tab in the game’s properties window. Select the ‘mac_linux_gl-1.0.3' branch for a version that is compatible with 10.10.5 up to 10.13.6.

1. Launch Steam.
2. Right click the game in your Steam Library.
3. In the dropdown that appears, select Properties.
4. In the new window that appears, select the Betas tab.
5. In the Betas tab, click the dropdown and select ‘mac_linux_gl-1.0.3'
6. The game will update.

Please try the following steps.

Navigate to the following folder:

Users > YOUR USERNAME > Library > Application Support > Feral Interactive > Medieval II Total War

[The user Library is hidden by default in macOS, so please refer to the following link if you are unable to locate it: http://osxdaily.com/2016/12/12/show-user-library-folder-macos-sierra/ ]

Delete the folder called: cache

Once this folder is deleted please try launching the game again.

I'm going to try and remain calm, but I have purchased Total War: Empire, Napoleon, Medieval II, Rome II, and Shogun II. I am now unable to play any of these titles outside of suboptimal conditions.

I reverted Shogun II back to the beta version, but the mouse cursor is obtrusive (covering text) and I want the updated version that I paid for. I cannot find a CACHE folder anywhere within the DATA folder for Shogun II. I also cannot locate the file "Users/yourusername/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Medieval II Total War/Medieval II Total War.app/Contents/Resources/specifications.xml" (replacing the correct username and title for Shogun II / 2).

Can somebody help me with this process for Mac OS 10.13.6 without having to resort to a janky beta version?

Feral Interactive updates the Total War games for Mac and unfortunately, Apple are such moronic ♥♥♥♥♥ that if you do not have the right version, nothing works.

If you're using an older version than the only way to play it is using the beta provided by Feral Interactive or to use a windows emulator.

You can also contact Feral Interactive yourself if you feel neither are reasonable and ask them for a solution.

If you cant even get to the point that you understand how not to necro topics on a forum I can guarantee you that a Mac is not for you.

I have the new Mac mini m4 chip and I can't seem to play medieval 2 total war too! every time I press play it just crashes immediately. Any advice or solutions ? Ive decided to return to steam since quitting in 2019 to play Third Age so I'm eager to get this fixed.
