no you don't?
you install TATW properly
you rename americas to idontcareabitwhatthisisblahblahblah
you rename Third_Age_3 to americas
then you tell Steam to launch the Americas campaign via right-click M2 -> Launch Americas
Well that's not what I did. This is the same issue I've been raising in many threads. Developers methods often don't work because they leave out steps or put in misleading steps. Of all the total conversion mods across Medieval 2 and Rome 1 that I've played (13 year vet here) I'd say maybe 2-3 have actually worked given the developers instructions, literally every other one I've had to hunt down a guide written by a third party in which the instructions in many cases differ completely.
And that point has been adressed. All mods, that aren't currently in development, will have been made for the retail version of the game, not the steam version. Thus, it's not the mods fault, or lack of instructions from the mod developers, but rather the fault off CA to not consider mods for the game when they placed the game on steam.
So stop blaming mod instructions that are correct for the retail version.
Actually the vast majority of these mods have instructions for disk and steam versions. I would be very surprised if you really were ignorant to this. Your point is largely redundant on this basis. People shouldn't have to search around for third-party fixes. Modders are supposed to people who fix ♥♥♥♥ in professionally made games and make them better yet this is principle loses itself when they deliberately do the same thing relying on others to fix their ♥♥♥♥. It just defies reasoning these people work unpaid, often for ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ years, in small teams, often in their own free time whilst working full-time in a regular job and after all that work, all that dedication, they'll give people in many cases completely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mind-bogglingly errornous information regarding installation.
I must fully disagree with that. Populair mods like Third Age have a very good installation guide and most of the time the problems is because of the user not reading correctly.
Example:
Installation
Requirements:
- TATW 3.2 is a stand-alone version and does not require any existing installations of TATW!
- If you have installed a previous version of TATW (2.1 or older), it is recommended to delete the old version before installing TATW 3.2.
(Note that TATW doesn't change any registry settings of your system, so you can also delete the old TATW folder "Third_Age" manually.)
- TATW 3.2 requires the 'Medieval 2 - Kingdoms Expansion' and is compatible with the official patch 1.04 and 1.05. (One installed campaign of the 'Kingdoms Expansion' is enough)
Installation:
- Install
TATW_3.0_Part1of2.exe &
TATW_3.0_Part2of2.exe &
You do not need the 3.1 patch, it contained a virus, just download the 3.2 patch and it will work.
into the default "Medievall II Total War" directory.
(Normally this is: "Programs/SEGA/Medieval II Total War")
If you have installed Medieval II into another folder, please select the folder manually.
- Start the mod with the 'Third Age - Total War' shortcut on your desktop
Additional installation instructions only for Steam users:
1. Install all parts of the mod as instructed above.
2. Open "Steam/Steamapps/Common/Medieval II Total War/mods". There you will find all your installed Kingdoms campaigns as well as the "Third_Age_3" modfolder.
3. Edit the name of one of the Kingdoms folders (americas, britannia, crusades, teutonic), preferably your least favorite campaign. The new name doesn't have to be anything specific.
4. Change the name of the "Third_Age_3" folder to the former name of the Kingdoms folder you just edited. For example, if you edited the "americas" folder, the "Third_Age_3" folder should be named "americas".
5. Select the appropriate campaign from the steam menu. If you renamed the "Third_Age_3" folder to "americas", select the americas campaign. If you named it "crusades", select the crusades campaign and so on.
6. Steam will now launch the mod.
If you have installed 3.0 or 3.1 and renamed your folders before you have installed the 3.2 Patch:
- If you have already renamed the "Third_Age_3" folder to one of your 'Kingdoms' campaigns (for example to "americas") install the patch normally.
- After the installation, move the files of the newly created "Third_Age_3" folder to the renamed folder manually.
(For example cut the content of the "text" folder from the newly created "Third_Age_3" folder and paste it into the "text" folder of your "americas" folder.)
Note : The "models_missile" folder has to be copied to the normal ".../Medieval II Total War/data" folder!
- The "Third_Age" folder can now be deleted.
This is taken from Moddb Third Age and gives a complete and understandable guide on how to install it. Doesn't seem thta hard to understand with all due respect?
Exactly. There will be different guides and instructions that quite literally state COMPELTELY different things from one another for exact same version of the exact same mod.
Just because there are other ways to install the mod doesn't mean the one they gave you doesn't work, just pick one you understand because they will all have the same outcome, so it doesn't matter if they are completely different.
In an ideal world I'd be able to download DaC, hit Run, and never have to worry about installation.
But due to some shenanigans computers are different. Take TATW.
-> For some renaming medieval2.exe to kingdoms.exe doesn't work
-> For some folder renaming doesn't work
-> For some it breaks no matter what they do
-> Some can't even install it due to Intel HD graphics bugging out (taskkill /f /im igfxem.exe ... solved so many of my problems)
Modders - especially M2 ones - are highly tech-savvy and will have navigated around Win10's update scheme to make something that works (top of the list - move Steam out of Program Files). Thus their computer is "susceptible" to modding, if you will call it that.
But people who just bought a computer out of the box and are trying to install TATW.... Windows 10 is getting worse and worse for modding & as such all sorts of things go wrong.
People are different. You lucky sod got it working within a minute. I didn't. I wrote the TATW guide because it took me an hour to troubleshoot and then another hour to troubleshoot in-game crashes.
