Stainless steel crashes during specific battle
Currently on my second ever stainless steel 6.4 campaign on...turn 120 or something. Have had few crashes overall and loading and playing the battle again has pretty much always worked. Apparently this one stupid battle refuses to work though. Have had three attempts and three unspecified errors in the first 5 minutes of the battle.

Short summary:

- In theory there shouldn't be anything weird with the units involved. I'm not using any units I haven't used before without issues and have fought against this faction before. (playing as Scotland, attacking the city of Venice held by Venice) Only one stack against one stack.

- No, I have not installed with the rename method. I followed Gigantus's guide.

- I believe I have used the 4k memory thing. Is there any way to check whether it is actually active?

- Have also tried running as admin in case that would make a difference. It did not.

Do you have the v1.27 fix?
Fay Feb 26, 2019 @ 12:52pm
There was some additional fix thingie but I can't remember the exact name of it. I'll see if I can find it.

Edit: This one? http://www.twcenter.net/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=4331

If so, I think so? Is there any way to check if it's set up properly?

Edit2: Yes, it seems to be. The ingame title screen says something about bugfix compilation v1.27.

it will say on the SS starting splashscreen it is the 1.27 bugfix version in the same graphics, you can't miss it
Fay Feb 26, 2019 @ 1:01pm
Yep, it's there.
can you just auto resolve past this battle?
Fay Feb 26, 2019 @ 1:05pm
Probably not, it's a huge city with ballista towers and almost a full stack, I'd get destroyed. :/

Can you find the system.log ?

Then copy the last 5 lines, that should point us to what is causing the crash.
Fay Feb 28, 2019 @ 2:13pm
Don't really know where to look for it. The "logs" folder in the medieval 2 folder is empty and the only thing that comes up when just searching "system.log" is files for paradox games.

Edit: Found something of the sort in the stainless steel folder but this is all it says:

Yeah...thats not what we need

Find the default.cfg and add

[log]
to = logs/system.log.txt
level=*script* trace

to it.

That should create the system.log and would show us what causes the crash. Just remove this bit first;

[log]
to=mods/SS6.3/system.log.txt
level=* error
;level=* trace

Okay, now there's a big dump of stuff. Last five lines you said?

00:42:06.138 [game.script.counter] [trace] counter <ai_stuck_launch> = 2
00:43:40.347 [game.script.exec] [trace] exec <if> at line 18291 in mods/SS6.3/data/world/maps/campaign/imperial_campaign/campaign_script.txt
00:43:40.347 [game.script.exec] [trace] exec <if> at line 18315 in mods/SS6.3/data/world/maps/campaign/imperial_campaign/campaign_script.txt
00:44:35.239 [game.script.exec] [trace] exec <if> at line 18344 in mods/SS6.3/data/world/maps/campaign/imperial_campaign/campaign_script.txt
00:44:35.239 [game.script.exec] [trace] exec <if> at line 18376 in mods/SS6.3/data/world/maps/campaign/imperial_campaign/campaign_script.txt
00:47:21.806 [system.rpt] [error] Medieval 2: Total War encountered an unspecified error and will now exit.

There's a bunch of similar-looking stuff above it but those are the last five.

Edit: Actually, you're getting the last six because I'm not 100% sure if that very last one counts.

How did you install the bugfix? I did a manual install, putting each file in its proper place- time-consuming, but worth it in the end.
Inardesco Feb 28, 2019 @ 11:40pm
The bugfix comes with an installer. Theres no need to replace all files manually
Fay Mar 3, 2019 @ 4:11pm
Well, for science I tried a different battle (field battle against Poland) and that worked fine. So...I guess at least it's not a case of "oh my save file is ♥♥♥♥♥♥ and I literally cannot play battles anymore"

If you're figjtimg the HRE than crashes can happen or it is simply that settlement.

Use auto_win (attacker/defender) to skip it
