Europa Barborum however, is rather good. So yeah, do that one. Like MTW 2 but with Romans instead.
If you can't accept that then Rome 2 and crayons.
(non-beta-build patches don't come out that often. If I remember correctly, the previous patch (2.3) was released about 1.5 years ago)
Rome 2 has far better diplomacy all around.
Alliances actually are worth something...
It also feels a lot more alive due to the multitude of factions in the game. Naval battles, even though not this good, are still pretty fun at times and naval landings give sieges a wholly new dimension.
The AI is better on the strategic map and on the battlefield no matter how you look at it and the agents are far better designed than in Med 2.
"Research" and politics give you a feeling of progression beyond the simple "coloring the map in your color", progression...
Some stuff is obviously worse, like the province system with no walls to all settlements except the provinde capital and the limited slots for building which places emphasis on keeping the balance instead of building up the settlement freely.
There is also the problem that Rome 2 has a complete stack system where troops can only be recruited and moved by a general, of which you can recruit only a capped number depending on your empire size. On the other hand, when compared to Shogun 2 or Empire, there are no buildings which you can rade with small units to impact the enemies economy anyway, so it actually sounds worse than it is in reality.
Nonetheless, I consider Rome 2 with DeI to be overall an upgrade when compared to EB2. The devs are also still working on the game, which means, that it will get more polish and content in the future while Med 2 is basically abandonware. Medieval 2 was a masterpiece and while it still has a few outstanding features, more of them are sadly outdated, bugged and were never fixed to an acceptable degree. Therefore, if you have the pocket money, I suggest you to grab Rome 2 with a few DLCs that you are interested in on a sale. Just make full use of the 2 hour trial time on Steam and don't bother playing vanilla. Get the game and get Divide et Impera before you make your first launch to get as historical of an expirience as you can with the game. (Because vanilla might actually make you sick enough to demand a refund after the first battle...) If you don't like it anyway, just refund. You won't lose any money and you'll have your answer.
Wait really? I just got bloody 2.3 like 2 weeks ago
But anyway to the topic, ive not had much time of playing the mod itself only custom battles, 1 to 2 min waiting beetwen turns [actually kinda fixed most of it but i think i ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up something wtih instalation since still sometimes can be up to 5 min]
