Say you renamed your Third Age as "crusades" you have to pick crusades from the start up in the library.
There was a pop up when you clicked to start MTW 2 that let you choose a Kingdoms campaign or the vanilla one but that seems not to work properly for me, I now have to right click on it in my library and choose there.
Yes I did, but whenever I do it it says that there was an unexpected error and crashed
It saves you the dinosaur method of renaming a campaign folder.

Here the correct way of installing TATW:

Install CoW without any changes in the set up, then play it from the desktop shortcut.
DO NOT USE THE FOLDER RENAME METHOD! (Unless you are a sucker for later pain)
Thank you for your help but it still has the same problem. for some reason the shorcuts and .bat files open the base game instead of the mods.
I tried the folder method before and it didnt work. I reinstalled the game again today to try a clean install with your method and it didnt work either.
Im really not sure whats wrong this time, I remember doing the same steps you listed the first time I installed the mods months ago and now when I did it again they dont work.
The only difference from back then is that the medieval folder is now call definitive edition instead of the regular medieval 2.
Nevermind the potential for really screwing things up if you get mixed up with your folders.

Check if you have an entry in your custom launch properties and remove it:
- right click the game in the library
- choose 'properties'
- click 'set launch properties' and remove any entry in there
Good, cuz renaming is stupid.
And beware the Ogres...they be bloody op.
