Total War: MEDIEVAL II - Definitive Edition

Total War: MEDIEVAL II - Definitive Edition

How many regions are there exactly?
Be honest. I keep getting mixed answers.

For vanilla M2TW it's 111 total, including the Americas.

You can check, if you'd like by going to game folders in your Steam directory and then to Medieval II Total War > data > world > maps > campaign > imperial_campaign and look for the file descr_regions_and_settlement_name_lookup.txt file and counting them for yourself. Each active province will have 2 entries like this:
North_America
Miccosukee
Inverness_Province
Inverness
Oslo_Province
Oslo
Stockholm_Province
Stockholm
Helsinki_Province
Helsinki
etc.

So just count the ones with _Province and ignore the couple of provinces which are listed but weren't added in the vanilla game (Brazil, Fortaleza).

Okay, thank you.

1. It is possible to have 200 regions, different sea colors (red sea, rest of water) count as regions.

2. The most reliable (and fastest) method to check the region total is to open data\world\maps\base\descr_regions.txt with Notepad++ (advanced, free text editor, link below). Search for 'religion' in the text (Ctlr+F) and then click the 'count' button in the search window.

Grand Campaign = 112
Americas = 56
British Isles = 45
Crusades = 67
Teutonic = 74

Either I miscounted by hand or maybe one of the regions in the descr_regions.txt file is remarked out and not used in the vanilla game? My guess is I miscounted.

Edit: Nope. It's Brazil aka Fortaleza. It is listed in the file but only as Brazil, not as Brazil_Province. So using a count for "religion" in the text includes it, but the game can't recognize it as a province. I never play mods that include the America regions and I haven't played vanilla since it first came out. Is Brazil a region in the Grand Campaign or just the Americas campaign and CA left it out of the GC simply by removing the _Province?

CA (and a lot of mods) simply didn't use the default format for that entry in descr_regions, the reason why I use a search for religion:

Brazil Fortaleza aztecs Native_Rebels 0 223 255 gold, timber, iron, chocolate, dyes, tin, america, no_pirates, no_brigands 5 4 religions { catholic 0 orthodox 0 islam 0 pagan 100 heretic 0 }

Yup, just checked again - you are correct. Wonder what happened the first time I ran the check.
