I still enjoy the Cumans as one of my favorites, but they undoubtedly have a better campaign in the 1100 start since they are the mounted archer power and you don't have to worry about the Mongols yet, and can have a fun time fighting against the Rus factions at your own pace, rather than being forced to invade the rus to save yourself from the Mongols.
Their roster is heavy on militia infantry( spearmen and Marines or whatever they're called) then local troops that fit the holes in your early missile problems qute nicely with a core of religious fanatic cavalry and infantry I've taken to call Islamic-Terminators... I mean holy ♥♥♥♥ those guys are hardcore and exterminating fatimids had never been easier.
It also represents the best place you can have a catholic faction... away from any other catholic factions , meaning that you will never be in danger of being excomunicated which is always the biggest annoyance with them(poor HRE and England).
Primarily the bonusses they get on the campaign ensures a more challenging aspect to the mod.
My Crusader States vh-vh campaign saw the biggest battle I've ever fought in Med2. Three Seljuk armies vs three of mine. Had to call in 2 under ai control and at the end, the entire hill was littered in bodies.
In general I prefer starting with the early campaign (unless the faction only appears in the late campaign like the TO), because it feels more like youre starting from scratch and need to build up, where as in the late campaign it often feels like you are jumping into the middle of a game that someone else started.
Maybe it has to do with difficulty, but I usually see them expand pretty far and I play on vh/vh. But it does vary quite a bit from game to game.
