Often it will be non combattant units attached to the error, such as diplomats etc etc.
Start going crazy with Assassins, thats how i solved a similar persistant error previously.
Game runs out of RAM to use (limited to 2gb courtesy of 32bit software) and thus crash.
LAA removes 2gb limit which solves 99/100 mod related issues.
It should fix most battle related crashes. In my first campaign on SS it worked fine until I got to war with the HRE. That's when my game started crashing.
IF you follow it properly then problems should be reduced to mod internal issues, provided you use the guide's link to my separate installer for the 1.27 fix and apply it.
For further problems I would recommend to visit the mod's site: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?314
Lets start at the beginning.
Does Medieval 2 vanilla work?
Have you installed Stainless Steel 6.3 + 6.4patch and the v1.27fix?
Where do you install Stainless Steel 6.3? Do you install it in its own folder or did you do stupid and renamed one of your kingdoms campaigns?
Do you even have Kingdoms?
Have you copied medieval2.exe and renamed it kingdoms.exe
Have you used LargeAdressAware on the medieval2.exe or the on the kingdoms.exe ?
=========================================================
That's all the installation related things.
Now on to your campaign.
How many saves do you have?
Have you used an older save to see if it works?
Have you tried autoresolving and then continueing?
Have you started a new campaign to see if the problem persists in a new save file?
If your save is corrupted, then no amount will fix it.
All the launcher does is tell the game (medieval.exe) to use a different folder for all the data.
You need to use LAA on the medieval2.exe and I also use it on the renamed kingdoms.exe just to be safe.
Windows can also be a b!tch when it comes to old games.
The Ai is given money
The Ai is given health bonusses
The Ai is given everything they can be given to be a fair fight.
That said....Stainless Steel and money is bloody ridiculous since there's nothing to spend money on because you're waiting on the recruitment pool to refil.
As for the Pope...F*ck him. Kill every enemy army that is on your land while the mission is active and you should be fine. If he excommunicates you. Kill the bugger.
Also....reputation is everything in Total War. So if you're reliable or under that you're free game for the AI.
