Lets do that, though...at the same time could mean changing all units in the export_descr_unit due to time periods.
Look for a file that houses the events and have a looksy in there.
the only locks are on gunpowder units, a few of the top tier units and some mercenaries, which should be left that way
Then you can change the event dates as they fire up. you can have them start at turn one or later on. instead of waiting 200-300 turns to have the needed events fire i made it happen a little sooner. still balanced i think but without the wait times. This also works for the base game and any kingdoms DLC.
Tell ya what when i found this out i felt like a genius.
I've not so much enjoyed Stainless Steel because the cavalry is goddarn overpowered to the point even light cavalry can rek high tier infantry with a single charge and you're basically always underpowered in comparison to the AI because their squalor is less than yours thus they have access to higher tier troops than you do.
I've enjoyed Italian Wars which is more focussed on the pike-and-shot era thus require different approach to warfare.
I've obviously enjoyed TATW and DaC so I'll shut up about those.
I've also enjoyed Thera the Great Torment which is a mixture of fantasy and a-historical factions utilising Roman troops and Line Infantry.
Why not? The game is barely balanced as it is, the AI cheats like crazy, and everything is rigged to stack against you, you are constantly having to use add_population console commands because arbitrary squalor is programmed to stop your cities and castles from growing unless you get really high chivalry gouvernours who will probably die from plague/random events/ai's heavy use of assassins after you've spent a long time to try to get that chivalry up, meaning you'll never get the coolest stuff. The AI can stack spam very tough units and you are constantly fighting more powerful armies.
I had to go and search how to bring back the merchant forts, stakes on roads (for stakes at the gates and bridges) had to lower the AI's preference for artillery, and make pikemen for my preferred faction show up earlier just to be able to have some fun from this game instead of psoriasis inducing stress and anger.
Now I love the map, and all the new units stainless steel gives us, but they overdid it on the difficulty and length, how many people ever get to the late events before finishing or starting a new campaign?
That's how the journey down the rabbit hole of modding starts. Beware, it's addictive.
PS:
squalor is defined by the descr_settlement_mechanics file, as are a multitude of other settlement settings.
'merchants forts' is a setting in descr_campaign_db
'stakes' is an attribute in export_descr_units
and then there is the 'season' script that stretches the game
Damn, it's good to be a modder
In all fairness, the AI isn't the most well known AI out there and simply needs the cheats in order to be semi-productive. Any decent player will play much better than them anyway.
Besides, the best battle I have had in Medieval 2 was in Stainless Steel. It was a 3v3 battle between me; Kingdom of Jerusalem and turks. I let the other 2 armies be under the control of the Ai and at the end of that battle I simply couldn't discern living soldiers from dead soldiers without spamming the shield icon that lights up friendly and hostile troops.
It was a glorious battle.
I know, the only one I didn't know was the squalor one, I did the others, for the squalor I just use the add_population command, I also made pikemen available for the HRE from the start and made them somewhat stronger, at first I also gave hand gunners the abillity to put stakes but I turned that off again as it was a bit too overpowered especially with those forts the HRE can build, they are very easy to defend if you have pikemen. I also increased free upkeep in forts to all 20 units you can place in there
I know but I don't like too much of a challenge, I just want some fun escapism and watch some nice carnage, I play on normal/normal and still think it's too hard sometimes because I occasionally am forced to micromanage stuff, I've been playing total war games since the first shogun, in the early years I liked the challenge, but now I just want casual fun and glorious victories.
I considered going back to vanilla Medieval but I like the look of SS6.4 and it's units too much
I dont mind the AI cheats on the campaign map, I do mind the ridiculous boosts they get on the battle map though. For Med2 thats only a morale boost, easily overcome. But in later TW's its everything thats boosted.
