The game is limited in the amount of hardware it can use. Thus, large scale battles, especially with mods, can cause the game to crash.
Have you bothered reading ALL the comments?
From the install instructions:
2. Essential bug fixes for TATW 3.2 version:
http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?646307-Vanillla-3-2-essential-bugfixes&p=14533296&viewfull=1#post14533296
Have you also applied said largeadressaware to increase the amount of hardware the game will utilise?
Also keep in mind that TA vanilla is heavily dependant on scripts that can break quite easily if the mod is installed and then renamed to a kingdoms campaign.
That's why the proper method is in the instructions and also available as stand alone guide

wait since when was this a thing or indeed a problem?
It has always been like that. Some files point to the install path to work and that can cause issues.
Ah yup, like the axethrower projectile crash in TATW.
