Missing Factions?
So, I just got the game and have the DLC. When I play the grand campaign for the main game, I only see five factions, yet I watched a YouTube video in which the guy had a whole bunch of choices while playing the main campaign. I have access to other factions in custom battles, yet not the grand campaign. Are they supposed to be there or am I only able to play these factions on their respective DLC campaigns?

Depends.....was the game modded? The Grand campaign has unlockable factions via conquest, in the good old fashioned way. The Kingdoms factions are not available in the grand campaign, except via mods.

You unlock other factions by killing them in the campaign, completing a campaign or modding the campaign. The Papal states are only unlockable trough modding, the Timurids, Mongols and Aztecs are only available trough extensive modding.

Uhm....I don't see see moving faction names from Unlockable to playable as "modding".

You don't see making modifications to game files as modding?

The first two are troublesome and don't always work.

Well I do. Are you trying to start an argument? You're doing a good job at it!

Factions being moved to playable is a result of playing the game. Modding, imo, constitutes bringing changes to a game that don't occur as a result of playing the game.

Except that in about 1/2 of installations the game doesn't move them to playable and you have to do it yourself.

I see where you're coming from though - you're doing something the game does. Except it doesn't. :P

Exactly, it's a naturally occuring change in the descr_strat when you play the game. It's like helping a woman give birth through a c-section. It's a lot quicker and less painful.

Do a short campaign as England. A fairly quick way to unlock everything very easily and entirely legit. The faction unlock mechanic was dropped after Empire: Total War if I recall, and Empire had you only unlock a single faction after completing the tutorial.

The Empire tutorial or Road to Independance simply allows you to play with the US after unlocking chapter 4.

The game will NOT modify the source file (descr_strat) - it will create a small file with the fitting name 'unlocked' for further campaigns once the unlock conditions are met. That's why changes in descr_strat (and the script) are not save game compatible.

Want to save yourself all the trouble? Install and play (directly from the desktop shortcut) my mod set up. It's the grand campaign with a number of fixes and all regular factiosn unlocked.

Worth pointing out you'll have to mod the game to fix the occupy glitch.

Except, if this is what I think it is (Bare Geomod),

Yup, it's one of the fixes in Bare Geomod, see complete list on the forum page I linked to.
