Leveling up your diplomats and princesses?
Is it better to first negotiate a trade agreement and THEN in the following turn trade map information

...or is it better to do both at the same time?

Which will have a higher impact on giving your agent +1 influence?

Agents improve their skills from both their activity, and the degree to which the deal agreed upon was in your favour - in the case of Diplomats.

So making two deals instead of one can can improve their skills from activity; but getting both trade & Map info, plus cash received is also around the same (Caveat: It's been years since I've looked into the files to see the specific values involved) due to the value of the deal involved.

Basically the closer you are to "Barely accepted" the more XP - and by extension, ranking; your Diplomat will gain. Same goes for spies assassins and merchants.

The lower their chance to make a successful action will give them more skills than a higher percentage would.

All that being said, Diplomacy isn't used that often in this game (compared to more recent titles), due to the fact you need an agent to approach the other faction to initiate the deal; and that as the game goes on there are fewer factions around, and only so many deals to be done.

There is an easy way to make Diplomacy work in this game - give them money. If there is a deal that you are desperately trying to get done but the faction is being difficult then try give them money it'll increase relations with them and then it'll be easier to negotiate.

The only way diplomacy works is by having a good reputation. No money is required to make diplomacy work.

He gets better XP if you get deals done or you bribe people successfully. And the reverse is true too. The more people he offends or the more propositions he doesn't complete it'll be detrimental to his XP.

Keep in mind that certain actions will also grant good traits (and therefore more levels). For example alliances. He'll get the trait "Orchestrated an Alliance" which is a +1. More alliances add to this (up to a max, I think it's +3). There's also bribe related traits to increase the odds of success at bribery.

Alliances are not their own trait in vanilla.
