This is sloppy and highly misleading.
Rename is entirely unnecessary for a standalone install that can be made fully functional by copying medieval2.exe and calling it kingdoms.exe, which will apply to all mods and not necessitate this archaic system that people insist holding onto. Most mods worth their salt are launched through batches, which gives you configuration settings to tune and properly load the mod. Through steam, you ignore the mod's config, potentially causing issues.
The path you described is horribly written and does not apply to literally any user. The correct snippet of path, which still doesn't really tell people where the steam install is, would be
steam/steamapps/common/Medieval II Total War/mods
The default path on windows 7, which isn't really advisable due to user account issues on mods (so, it is best to install outside of program files if at all possible) would be
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Medieval II Total War\mods
I knew my thing was archaic, but it's the one always working, I'll try out your method though, sounds cool.
Maybe that's why I had a trouble with UI.
I copied medieval2.exe and renamed the copy into kingdoms.exe
But when trying to launch the mod from its launcher it simply launch vanilla game.
So basically I kept my message short, but I had many things going with trying to make your thing work.
Lastly I deleted the whole mod folder, I unzipped it again inside mod folder.
I deleted kingdoms.exe, launched again the mod in my old fashion.
Then renamed it again like it was, created again kingdoms.exe and tried again the launcher, and boom it worked.
I don't know what went wrong in the first place, but now it's working.
- The folder name must be exactly as specified by the configuration file and the batch file. If the folder, batch, and config do not line up, the launch fails. This isn't hard to sync manually if you are comfy with it, but if you're not, it is wise not to screw with it at all.
- Virtually all mods of substance use kingdoms.exe, which exists on the disc, but was merged on steam. The mods are tricked by copying and renaming since the new medieval2.exe has everything that kingdoms.exe did.
