Did you have a mod installed before? When you click Grand Campaign and it changes to give another message rather than allowing you to start a game it is a missing, modified, or corrupt file.
Gigantus Jan 9, 2017 @ 12:25am
The Grand Campaign selection button is directly linked to the imperial_campaign folder. If that folder is missing then you get that type of message - same with the tutorial button that links to the norman_prologue folder (both in data\world\maps\campaigns)

I have the imperial campaign folder and the norman campaign, but the same proplem happens with the tutorial and with historic battles.

Please check if these folders a descr_strat fiel. If they do then that confirms Hawk's coomment.
You can try to download new files: delete the data\world folder and then verify your game files: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2037-QEUH-3335
After the verification and download of the new files have finished try again.

If it still doesn't work then download and install my mod set up: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=352216
This will allow you to play the Grand Campaign by using the provided desktop shortcut

Brazenly copying Hawks comment from another thread for a possible solution if all the above doesn't work:

I have not worked up a means to fix yet if this is the case as it is just starting to be a problem and I can only tell you what to try.

If you have mods or have had mods, you need to delete the entire contents of your Medieval 2 folder and verify your files to fix.

If you do not have mods (I would appreciate confirmation to help others), shut Steam down completely by selecting "Steam" in the top left and selecting exit. Go find your Steam shortcut and right click launching as Run as Administrator, go to games list, select Medieval 2 Total War, right click, select properties, go to local files tab, and select Verify Game Cache.

Once it completes, click browse local files, right click Medieval2.exe, select properties, on Compatibility Tab, set to run as Administrator, go back to Steam games list, run Medieval. Once you set your preferences and load a game to verify it is working, shut down game and steam, run steam normally and test to make sure running still.

Hahahaha! I dont mind anyone quoting me. You do not even have to tag me. I only get upset when someone takes someone elses's work and claims it as their own. That however, is just basic common computer sense to bypass permissions levels. It has been working for Empire so I just applied in a similar case. I dont even know if it is enough of an override yet though.

kudu, if this works for you, please let us know in order to better help others.

Thank you guys for taking the time to help me. One question Gigantus, how do I download your mod I do not know how to, and does it affect me if I use a mac?

and does it affect me if I use a mac?
oh well there's your problem then :steammocking:

Although M2 usually runs quite nicely on a Mac... can you launch any of the Kingdoms expansions?
kudu Jan 10, 2017 @ 1:07pm
I used to before the fire nation attack! No but seriosly when I first got the game I could but now theres a problem :( Oh and also I dont hear any sound when I play exept for the menu music. I am so gratfull for all your help thanks once again. I have somany problem with game useing a Mac.

Oh well, at least M2 launches which is usually about half the problem anyway. Try running an expansion and not the GC (Grand Campaign) instead? (If that works you can install the Retrofit mod, which is the GC running on the Kingdoms engine)

Oh and also I dont hear any sound when I play exept for the menu music
First of all, check the in-game sound options - secondly, check your audio drivers if you can as those do sometimes cause minor explosions (normally lag, though).

How do I install the Retrofit mod? and how do I check my audio drivers. I am sorry bout not knowing anything I'm just bad at tech stuff.

Okay, so first of all check to see whether any of the Kingdoms expansions work. (Library -> Right-click Medieval II Total War -> Launch particular expansion of your choice).
Ignore the Retrofit mod for now - that's a back-up plan.

Secondly, to check your audio drivers GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOGLE

nearly all of us are pretty bad at tech stuff
but the ones that seem like we are is because we use GOOOOOOOOOOOOOGLE

The problem with Google is it is too full of crap anymore. If you are not good at setting search paremeters that is not always easy.

I will guess you have corruption problem due to a permissions problem. Gigantus gave the steps to follow first quoting me.
kudu Jan 10, 2017 @ 4:01pm
no the other expantions do not work.

kudu Jan 10, 2017 @ 4:04pm
